DISCUSSION 1:

Different from a job interview, an informational interview is a conversation you arrange with someone who works in a field or company that interests you. The purpose of this type of interview is to help you explore an industry, organization, or job title. You may ask questions focused on how to break into an industry, what a career in that field or organization is really like, and whether it fits your skills and interests. Since you are not seeking a job offer, think of informational interviewing as a way to gather information and to prescreen a potential job, industry, or company.

DISCUSSION 2:

As the Crafting Your Personal Brand Workbook highlights, developing a brand

• helps you focus on the value you bring to employers and identifies the unique traits you bring to the workplace;
• delivers an authentic message to hiring managers around your career goals and depicts who you are as a professional;
• enables employers to see not only the skills you have, but also the unique personality and character traits you have to offer; and
• helps you define how your vision for the future aligns with the long-term business objectives of the hiring organization, effectively elevating your status from commonplace commodity to one-of-a-kind package.

Take a moment to describe your professional strengths and make an argument for why they are important.

DISCUSSION 3:

This week, Chapter 2 considers the relationship between individuals and communities. Oftentimes, this discussion is at the center about debates over technology and ethics. When considering the relationship between individuals and communities, Michael Boylan suggests that there are two main considerations (“The Self in Context: A Grounding for Environmentalism”).

1. The way that individuals understand their role and ability to act
2. They way that individuals see and understand their actions within a larger social context

Using this schema as a guide, what is the relationship between the individual and his or her environmental community? What are the individual roles and responsibilities to act ethically when considering technological impact on the environment? Be sure to illustrate your response using a concrete example of a technology and key formations.

Component B: Resume/Cover Letter (100 pts.). Turn your attention to the present time and place. Even if you are currently working, find a different, specific (better?) position for which you are qualified. Prepare a resume and cover letter targeting the specific job you have chosen (does not have to be the company in Project 2A. Cover letter= 1st person allowed, business letter format, Resume= 3rd person, resume format. (Examples for both formats are found in the reader)

A few things to add to the cover letter:

• Make sure you have additional contact information with the address at the top. List a phone number and email address there or in the last paragraph. Many of you will want to match the heading from your resume to the heading on the letter. This is not required but does look nice!
• Do not just repeat the same information contained in your resume. This is your chance to discuss why you are a great candidate!
• Email addresses are not underlined or in blue.

A few things to check in the resume:

• All past jobs are in past tense (managed, worked, assisted, etc.). Current jobs are in present tense (manage, work, assist, etc.)
• Do not list high school or high school activities.
• Finally, you are allowed to get help from the Career Center. The worse thing that will happen is you will get an A on this section! 

Compare and contrast the Khoe-Khoe and San Bushmen of southern Africa. Specifically,

address aspects of their cultures including their respective historical backgrounds and

origins, where each group is generally found, their economy, social constructs, and

spiritualism, among other things covered in the on-line lecture. Describe the archaeological

Writing requirement:

Definition of a live play: A public performance of a play, whether it’s a musical theater production, a comedy or a drama. It may not be a reading (e.g., David Sedaris reading from his work at Hult Center, although that will be very cool); it may not be a live performance of music (e.g., a musical tribute to Frank Sinatra, although that also is very cool.) It should be a play with characters, a plot of some kind, scenes, etc. It does not have to be professional–it can be at a high-school, college or local theater like Cottage Grove.

ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION:

1. When you attend the play, bring this sheet with you and answer the questions at the bottom of this assignment sheet. You will write a combination Observation Report and Play Review for this week. For full credit, you will need to write at least 750 words (2 full page) including your observations about the theater, the audience, your seating, etc., and the play performance itself. The 3-page length is the minimum for a passing grade. That will not “earn” you “full points” for the assignment. The quality of your work is what earns you points.

2. Feel free to write for longer than 750 words, but be sure that your paper is a structured and organized piece of writing—NOT a list of notes thrown together.

USE THIS WORKSHEET WITH GUIDELINES TO FOLLOW FOR YOUR THEATER REVIEW:

When performance night arrives, plan to get there at least 15 minutes early so that you can take time to observe the audience as they gather. This is part of the communal experience of theater, and as a student of drama it is essential that you experience this. Describe the audience as a group, or choose one or two theater-goers who particularly interest you. Please do not be intrusive in your observations, but maintain the same courteous social decorum you would at any event. Write your notes here:

Reflect on your own feelings about being in a theater. Is this an unusual way for you to spend your time and money? What’s different about going to the theater vs., say, going to a basketball game or a movie?

Sit down in the audience early enough to look around you and write down what you see: is the stage open or closed? Is there anything on the stage? If so, describe it; if not, reflect on the empty stage or closed curtain.

Is there music playing? If so, what is it? What is the tone of the music?

Is this an amateur production or professional? Musical? Comedy? Tragedy?

Look at the theater program. Examine the cast of characters to prepare yourself for the play. Do you recognize any of the actors’ names? Is the program slick or a simple Xerox copy? What does that tell you about the production?
