Practical Theology: The Word of God Assignment Instructions

Overview

Theology is never developed or expressed in a vacuum, either personally or practically. In order to move you from Biblical Theology (getting it from the right source) to Systematic Theology (getting it straight) to Practical Theology (living it out), there needs to be a certain flexibility of application based on your personal calling and goals as a Christian leader. Therefore, you will have the chance to choose what fits your current or future ministry needs best with this assignment (and the second one just like it later in the course). For instance, if Christ has called you to a teaching or preaching ministry, then the Curriculum or Sermon Projects below might prove most helpful to you as you prepare to integrate what you are learning theologically into your ministry context. On the other hand, if you are pursuing education to serve Christ’s kingdom as a Christian counselor, then you should choose the Biblical Counseling Project. We want this assignment to be as helpful and applicable as possible for you as you seek to be equipped to work in a specific ministry context. For this second practical theology assignment, you will focus your work only on The Word of God (Bibliology: Divine Revelation and Personal Discipleship).

Instructions

Complete a theological reflection and application assignment related to ONE of the following options in reference to the Method of Christ:

  1. Curriculum Project

The student may develop a course related to The Word of God (Bibliology: Divine    Revelation and Personal Discipleship). This may be particularly beneficial to those who           are involved in active ministry, for your materials may be directly suited to your own             ministry needs. The project should make use of class notes, textbooks, other readings,       and any other information you may wish to include. However, it must be your own          arrangement of the materials in your own words. The curriculum must be appropriate for             the target audience. The student is encouraged to include audiovisual aids, but these are    not required. You must support your curriculum with at least 3 scriptural passages as well      as with course/outside texts that properly address the topic from a conservative          evangelical point of view. This assignment must be 2,500–3,000 words, be original work,             be in current Turabian format, and use footnotes where needed.

  1. Thought Journal

Thought journals are an excellent way to force oneself to ponder issues and interact with           ideas over time. In this assignment option, the student will complete an indefinite number         of journal entries throughout the first 6 weeks of the course related to The Word of God             (Bibliology: Divine Revelation and Personal Discipleship). Each entry will consist of a    single page, double spaced (preferably typed), and should meet several criteria: Each           journal entry should deal with a topic relevant to The Word of God (Bibliology: Divine             Revelation and Personal Discipleship), should demonstrate personal interaction with        the issues involved, and should demonstrate a depth of thinking and clarity of expression.

Beyond these criteria, the student is encouraged to exercise creativity in writing the          journals. Some entries may critically analyze an issue from a given discussion or from the            textbooks. Others may consist of book reviews or even film reviews that are relevant to       The Word of God (Bibliology: Divine Revelation and Personal Discipleship). You must support at least three of your thought journals with scriptural passages as well as   with course/outside texts that properly address the issue from a conservative evangelical       point of view. Use of outside sources is not required for all your journals entries, but is   strongly encouraged for at least some of the journal entries. This assignment must be        2,500–3,000 words, be original work, be in current Turabian format, and use footnotes        where needed.

  1. Sermon Project

With this option, the student will produce two sermons focused on The Word of God             (Bibliology: Divine Revelation and Personal Discipleship). In other words, one can use            this as an opportunity to preach about the trustworthy of the Bible. These sermons need to            be full transcripts of a 20-30 minute sermon (about five pages per sermon double spaced),      and they need to include an introductory paragraph with a description of the target         audience (Senior Adults, Young Adults, Youth, etc.). You must support your sermons           with at least 3 scriptural passages as well as with course/outside texts that properly       address the topic from a conservative evangelical point of view. This assignment must be             2,500–3,000 words, be original work, be in current Turabian format, and use footnotes       where needed.

  1. Biblical Counseling Project

If a student chooses this option they will produce a number of biblical response papers to     be used in personal counseling sessions. These Bible studies must all integrate            theological truths related to The Word of God (Bibliology: Divine Revelation and      Personal Discipleship). Each response should be about two pages double spaced and      relate to specific felt needs that might be addressed in your future ministry as a biblical   counselor (abuse, addiction, anger, depression, divorce, grief, illness, etc.). These two-         page papers would be handed to the counselee and worked through during a counseling             session. You must support each of your biblical response papers with at least 3 scriptural          passages as well as with course/outside texts that properly address the issue from a   conservative evangelical point of view. This assignment must be 2,500–3,000 words, be             original work, be in current Turabian format, and use footnotes where needed.

Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.

Elaborate on the Topic for Your Critical Review

This assignment continues your analysis of your selected neuropsychological disorder. The disorder is the same disorder you selected in Week 1 and for which you discussed its neurobiology in the Week 1 assignment (topic selection). Please remember – you will continue to use the same disorder to complete the Week 6 assignment (comprehensive Critical Review of the same disorder and its management).

Reminder – your completed Week 1 and Week 2 assignments will be used as a foundation to help you complete your Week 6 assignment (Critical Review) on the same disorder. Thus, your work in Week 1 and in Week 2 will be used to support your work in Week 6.

This week, please focus on the pharmacological (drug) treatment of your selected disorder. Other modes of treatment are not the focus of our class. For instance, papers that discuss psychotherapy, other than in passing, will not be given credit. In your paper, please be sure that the following aspects of your topic are discussed:

  • Describe the key classes of drugs used to treat your selected disorder. A “class” of drug usually indicates the drug’s mechanism of action (how the drug exerts is pharmacological effects on the body). Be sure to explain why this class of drugs or classes of drugs would be helpful in treating your selected disorder by describing the action of these drugs on the neurotransmitter system(s) involved in the disease process. Within each class of drug, there will be one or more drugs available on the market for use in clinical management, and examples of these should be included in your discussion.
  • Analyze and describe the agonist-antagonist activity of the drugs, and the receptor types and subtypes on which the drugs will exert their pharmacological action. Indicate if these drugs will reverse or slow the disease process, or if they will only help ameliorate symptoms.
  • Close your paper with an analysis of the risk-benefit of drug use for your selected disorder. Include a discussion of how the drug class(es) would be typically used, what expected benefits would be obtained from drug use, and what common drug side effects might occur.

For Week 2, please research a minimum of three peer-reviewed or scholarly articles published within the last 5 to 10 years. These references are in addition to those used in the Week 1 written assignment and should focus on pharmacological (drug) treatment of your selected disorder. These sources should provide evidence-based information to help support your analysis, focusing on the aspects described above. Be sure to cite your sources in your paper and include them on your References page. You may utilize required or recommended course materials in your work, but these will not count towards the reference requirements; however, you may cite and reference the American Psychiatric Association’s (2013) DSM-5 as one of your sources used for the grading credit.

The paper:

  • Must be three to five double-spaced pages in length, excluding title page and references page, and it must be formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Writing Center.Links to an external site.

In your Rapid Review, analyze and explain the pharmacological aspects of the drug as they relate to the following: neurotransmitters affected, receptors, route of administration, half-life, doses, side effects, drug interactions, contraindications, and other important facets of the drug. Explain these aspects of the drug in terms of the psychiatric disorders indicated for the drug and the issue(s) associated with that use.
