Classical and Operant Conditioning

Have you ever wondered how you will control a class of students? There are various techniques in how teachers can “manipulate” students to act in a manner that is appropriate and conducive for learning. Behaviorism tells us that learning is observed through changes in behavior. When students respond to situations in their environment, this is when we can see the occurrence of learning unlike cognitivists that suggests learning is also an unobservable change that occurs within the brain. The use of behaviorism is prominent in a teacher’s classroom management plan as this is where the teacher wants to see an observable change in behavior.

Read Chapter 5 of our text to gain an understanding of Pavlov’s classical and Skinner’s operant conditioning.

  • First, describe the difference between classical and operant conditioning. Reflect on your own educational experience. Describe examples of classical and operant conditioning that you have experienced. Also, describe outcomes of each.
  • Then, compare positive and negative reinforcement strategies. How is negative reinforcement different than punishment? Refer to the examples you shared in your first paragraph: explain whether they were instances of positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, or punishment. Provide your reasoning and explain how they impacted your learning.

Form of Business

Instructions
On May 7, 2019, two technology managers from a couple of leading social media companies met for dinner at a restaurant in Palo Alto, CA. These technology managers had known each other for a long time as they had played golf together in college. One of the technology managers, Jim Lawson a resident of Las Vegas, NV, was in fact a former PGA tour player who continued to play in professional golf events. He was scheduled to play in a golf tournament the following week for which he would receive $100,000 as an appearance fee because of his stature within the social media industry.

During dinner, they each shared that they were displeased with the social media industry in general and, more specifically, displeased that their respective companies did not protect users’ data. The friends had each accumulated significant wealth due to stock options and possessed financial security. They discussed starting their own company, which they would name TALKER. TALKER would be based on a proprietary algorithm that would protect users’ data. In their view, TALKER had the potential to grow quickly and take market share from other social media companies. They thought that data servers would be needed in the U.S., Singapore (to serve the Asian market), and the Netherlands (to serve European users). They also recognized that, as the new business grew, external financing would likely be needed to sustain the growth. The two technology managers were uncertain, however, whether their current employers would challenge their perceived use of proprietary technology or trade secrets.

The technology managers were also concerned about the ongoing U.S. Congressional hearings and inquiries into the liability protections afforded social media companies under the Communications Decency Act, 47 U.S.C. section 230 (more commonly known simply as “section 230”). Both agreed that the liability protections under section 230 would have to remain in place for the start-up business to be successful. If a social media company is deemed to be a “publisher” it can lose its liability protection. They each vowed to think about TALKER’s business procedures or operating processes to put in place to maintain the section 230 liability protections.

During dinner, and before ordering a second bottle of wine, one of the technology managers, Jim Lawson, went outside to take a phone call. Back inside the restaurant, he made his way to the restroom. In the hallway leading to the restroom, Jim slipped and fell on the wet slate tile floor. The slate tile floor had recently been mopped by one of the employees who did not place a “Caution: Wet Floor” sign in the area. This slate tile floor had recently been installed and the sheen on the new tiles had not worn off.

As a result of the fall, Jim injured his arm and cannot participate in the corporate golf outing the following week where he would’ve been paid $100,000. Jim would later incur $10,000 in medical expenses related to the fall in the restaurant.

Jim made his way back to the table with the assistance of restaurant staff to complete the discussion with his colleague. They decided that one of the next steps was to think through the legal, tax, and business considerations of a potential start-up business.

  1. Form of Business

Discuss the forms of business that should be considered for the TALKER start-up business. In your response, discuss the legal, tax, and other business issues for each of the forms of business the founders should consider.
What form of business for this start-up business do you recommend on these facts?

The Slip and Fall
Where may Jim Lawson, the plaintiff, file the lawsuit related to his fall in the restaurant? Which court system?
What is the cause of action, or legal claim, the plaintiff may assert along with the elements of the claim?
Apply the facts of the case to the elements of the cause of action. Discuss.
What defense(s) may the defendant assert? Discuss.

Assignment Instructions

AN OVERVIEW OF RESEARCH PAPER REQUIREMENTS

All work should be submitted in APA 7th edition style, which includes (if sources are used) in-line citations and a References page. No exceptions.

Note that references used for your research need to be peer-reviewed/scholarly journals. These journals typically have the following characteristics:

1. articles are reviewed by a panel of experts before they are accepted for publication;
2. articles are written by a scholar or specialist in the field;
3. articles report on original research or experimentation;
4. are often published by professional associations;
5. utilize terminology associated with the discipline.

Research Paper Instructions:

Choose one of the topics listed below to write an 8–10-page research paper on. (8-10 pages excluding the title page, reference list, appendices) Your paper MUST be in APA Format.

Do not include quotes in your work. I want to see your critical thinking skills on display and not a string of quotes written by published authors. Your analysis is what is needed for a successful paper. At this point in your educational journey, you should have solid substance and proper academic formatting in your college-level writing assignments. Students will be graded on both so make sure you turn in your best work. Do not wait until the last minute to research, write, format, and edit. Proper time management is required to turn in a quality paper that highlights your criminal justice writing.

This is a major assignment so please follow the instructions carefully.

1. Use at least five articles from scholarly sources in a paper that discusses police departments and crime control strategies.

2. Use at least five articles from scholarly sources in a paper that discusses illegal drug use, illegal prostitution, and money laundering.

3. Use at least five articles from scholarly sources in a paper that compares and contrasts the problems associated with defining and determining the frequency of corporate crime in the United States.

4. Use at least five articles from scholarly sources in a paper that examines one of the various theories that explain crime.

5. Use at least five articles from scholarly sources in a paper that critiques middle-class delinquency’s relationship to gangs.

Use the APUS library to find at least five, peer-reviewed articles that cover your chosen topic from the list above. Again, you are required to use scholarly, peer-reviewed journals, in-text citations, and provide a reference page for this paper.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Once you have submitted the assignment it is automatically run through a plagiarism checker. When you submit your paper into the “assignment” area (as a word doc only) it is processed for plagiarism detection. The paper should not contain any direct quotes. In other words, sources used in the paper should be paraphrased, cited in proper APA format and reflect critical thinking.

In addition, it is important to note the following critical aspects for your paper that if not completed correctly could result in a 0% despite the paper’s content and other evaluation criteria as noted below:

Your paper MUST be in proper APA format.

Your paper MUST utilize APPROPRIATE references.

You MUST avoid any form of plagiarism at all costs.

Multicultural Perspective

Today’s classrooms are diverse and you will be expected to meet the needs of all of your students. Many of our students come from different cultures, which affects how they learn. We must take this into consideration when developing our lesson plans, making our role as an educator even more complex. As a result, we must be informed of our students’ cultural backgrounds as this includes another element of cognitive understanding that will guide our instructional practices. By understanding student culture, we can gain insight into learning preferences, interests, motivation, and prior knowledge.

Based on the important features of multicultural education found in Figure 4.6 of our text and selecting a specific content standard from the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSS), develop a learning activity that includes these key features of multicultural education:

  • Integration of content – How does your learning activity incorporate content from different cultures?
  • Reducing Prejudice – How does the learning activity attempt to minimize any of your own prejudices as well as your students?
  • Making Teaching Equitable – How does the instructional approach to your learning activity meet the needs of all your students by recognizing learning styles, interests, and motivation to help achieve academic potential?
  • Empowering Learners – How does the learning activity empower all students to work toward their academic potential?
  • Construction of Knowledge – How does your learning activity promote different perspectives that validate how culture influences knowledge and beliefs?

Be sure to first provide your content standard from the CCSS followed by your learning activity. Then explain how your learning activity meets each element of multicultural education by providing evidence to justify and support your assertions. Then reflect on your K-12 school experience. Was a multicultural education part of your schooling? What factors may have contributed to the inclusion or exclusion of a multicultural education in your own early schooling? Make sure to incorporate the five key features of multicultural education in your reflection.
