Background:

When discussing solubility related to living organisms, one category of compounds that should be discussed are vitamins.

Vitamins are organic molecules that are essential to an organism for proper growth and nutrition. If an organism makes too little of these compounds or does not make them at all, they must be obtained through dietary or supplemental sources. The human body’s daily requirement of vitamins is relatively small, but deficiencies can lead to serious health consequences. For example, a vitamin C deficiency is well-known for causing the disease scurvy, and a lack of vitamin B12 can lead to symptoms ranging from constipation to depression and behavioral changes (Ryan-Harshman &Aldoori, 2008). Proper nutrition and variety in an individual’s diet are vital to ensuring the recommended daily vitamin intake is met so that deficiencies do not occur.

Vitamins help build, defend, and maintain different parts of the body. Many vitamins are also cofactors or coenzymes of enzymes. This means that they assist bodily enzymes to function efficiently and help the body to extract or utilize energy from foods. Each of the 13 types of vitamins has a specific role within the body and each is essential for optimal health.(Grand Canyon University, 2016).

Questions & Activity:
