Ethics, Subjectivity, and the Art of Assessment

[WLO: 3] [CLOs: 1, 2, 4]

Prior to beginning work on this journal assignment, read the following:

Objectivity and subjectivity are concepts frequently discussed in the sciences. When applied to psychological assessment, objectivity describes data that is collected through measurement, observation, and the examination of information considered to be factual. Subjectivity describes information based on factors unique to the evaluator (e.g., personal morals, worldviews, personal opinions, and value judgments). All assessments have both objective and subjective aspects.

Your paper should be two to three double-spaced pages and should model critical thought and understanding of the content, as demonstrated in Samantha Agoos’s TED-Ed animation 5 Tips to Improve Your Critical Thinking. Refer to the Writing Center’s APA Citing Within Your Paper Guide resource to assist you when providing APA Style citations to support your ideas based on information summarized and paraphrased from the assigned readings and additional scholarly sources. Apply the rules associated with professional academic grammar in your writing and consider using the University of Arizona Global Campus Writing Center’s Grammarly: A Free Proofreading Tool resource. Minimally, cite the required article and the textbook to support your points. You may also use additional scholarly sources. The Scholarly, Peer Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources table offers additional guidance on appropriate source types. Do not use information from dictionaries or encyclopedias in your paper. References should be listed on the last page of your journal assignment following APA Style format, seventh edition. You will have until 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 (Monday) to submit your journal assignment.

After reviewing the required readings, reflect on the following quote from the course textbook.

Psychometrics is also the art and science of determining how valid the inferences are that are drawn from a test. If a test isn’t reliable, if results are not consistent from one administration to the next, and the test doesn’t do a good job of establishing a true score, it is not a good measurement tool. It cannot be counted on to provide accurate information about the attribute in question. Thus, establishing the reliability of a test is fundamental to determining the validity of the interpretations of test scores. However, even a test that is reliable can produce results that are not valid for the test’s intended purpose. (Goldfinger, 2018, p.9)

To successfully complete this assignment, address each of the following topics in your journal in the order presented below.

Introduction

Identify a psychological test you learned about in this class. Ideally, select a test that is relevant to some aspect of your current or future career journey. It may be a test that was discussed in the course resources or a test you researched for one of the assignments for this course. Briefly describe the test, what it measures, and why you selected it. As this is a journal assignment, your introduction does not need to have a thesis statement.

Ethics

Discuss ethical and methodological considerations related to cultural diversity using this assessment. For groups representing which types of diversity would this test be most valid? For which diversity groups would you expect test bias or examiner bias to be more likely to negatively impact validity?

Subjectivity

Having completed this class, describe how your understand of psychological assessment has developed or changed. How susceptible, in general, are you to advertising and marketing strategies and how might that level of susceptibility make it more likely for you to use a test without fully researching the validity of the test? What resources and skills do you have that will enable you to fully research tests being considered for use?

Reminder: An internet search alone does not constitute fully researching a test. Search engines direct sources to users based on algorithms, paid advertisements, not science, and confirmation bias often leads users to stop researching once they find an article that agrees with what they already believe or want to believe.

The Art of Assessment

Despite limitations in tests and assessment procedures, they can also be useful bring together data and information from multiple sources toward gaining a better understanding of an individual, group, family, or program. Reflecting on the quote from the Goldfinger text above and any personal experience you have with testing and assessment, create an artform to depict what “the art of assessment” means to you. In this section, your creation may be shared in any of the following formats: poem, song lyrics, image, cartoon, story board, figure, graphic, or a photograph of a physical item you create. Include a brief description for your creation and explain how it represents “the art of assessment.”

Conclusion

Share any additional reflections you would like to share related to psychological testing and assessment.

Ethical and Fair Testing in the Workplace [WLOs: 1, 2, 3] [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4]

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum, review the Pre-Employment Testingwebpage and read the following:

When psychological assessments are used in the workplace, their primary aim is to predict and measure workplace-related outcomes. Assessments should be valid and fair to every job candidate and employee required to take a test. For talent development, psychological assessments are often utilized to identify employees’ strengths and weaknesses. In this discussion you will take the role of an industrial-organizational psychologist consulting with human resources managers who oversee hiring for their organizations. The managers are interested in determining how psychological tests can be utilized as part of the selection process and in talent development. To successfully complete this discussion, your post must be at least 600 words and include the following:

  • Recommend at least one psychometrically sound integrity test for use in for employee selection. Include a brief description of the test you recommend and what it measures.
  • Recommend at least one test that would be a more psychometrically sound option for personality assessment in the workplace than the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Include a brief description of the test you recommend and what it measures.
  • Defend your test choices by briefly summarizing specific factors related to cultural diversity that should be taken into consideration.
  • Debate the pros and cons of using psychological tests in the selection of police officers.
  • Evaluate key ethical issues to consider when utilizing psychological tests in the workplace.
  • Support ideas you share in your post by referencing the required resources for this week and at least one additional peer-reviewed journal article published within the last fifteen years.

Note: It is common for there to be a delay between the time a test publisher updates a test and the time textbook and other authors can update their information about the new version of the test. Be sure to do online research to make sure you are recommending the most current version of the test. If there is a newer version than the version discussed in the textbook, other readings, or listed below, discuss the newest version available. Research up-to-date information about the tests you select to discuss by visiting the test publishers’ websites and identifying at least one additional peer-reviewed journal article published within the last fifteen years. Review the resource from the University of Arizona Global Campus Library, Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources, for guidance on identifying a peer reviewed journal article.

The reference list and any instructions copied into the discussion forum do not contribute to the minimum word count. Be sure to document your sources by including APA-formatted citations and references. Review the UAGC Writing Center’s resources, APA: Formatting Your References List and APA: Citing Within Your Paper for guidance.

Module 8: Portfolio Project

Option #1: Investments in the Finance Profession

The Portfolio Project assignment consists of an academic paper that examines the topic of Investments in the Finance Profession. The schedule for the portfolio is below:

  • Week 3: Submit your topic, key points of the paper, and a brief discussion of why you selected your specific topic.
  • Week 5: Submit a complete outline of all elements to be addressed, a detailed listing of all key points to be covered, and a description of facts and sources to be referenced.
  • Week 8: Submit the completed Portfolio Project.

The purpose of this Portfolio Project is to allow you to select an area of the course that has personal interest to you, having the most direct relevance to your career/professional life, and explore it in depth, creating linkages to other topics of the course.

Using the syllabus and topics covered in the course, as well as readings assigned, select your topic and prepare a 7- to 10-page (double spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font) paper that addresses the following areas:

  1. Detailed Summary. Provide a detailed summary to demonstrate an understanding of the concept being researched. Use the textbook, as well as other credible, professional sources to enhance and express your knowledge on the subject area (2-4 pages).
  2. Literature Review. Use the University library to review professional publications and locate articles that relate to your topic. These articles should be published in journals that are utilized by financial planning professionals. Do not cite sources such as Wikipedia, Investopedia or general websites in your review of the literature. The CSU Global library is a good place to do research.
    1. Only professional sources (i.e., journals from the library) should be used. Please consult with your instructor or the CSU Global librarian if you are unsure what qualifies as a professional source. You should include 5-7 articles and within your review compare, contrast and synthesize the points presented within the articles to reach a conclusion on how professionals feel on the issue being researched (2-4 pages). Use an APA format for the literature reviews including an abstract for each source.
  3. Case Study. Using yourself, a relative, or a fictitious client that you may work with at some point, create a basic case study to illustrate how your concept would be applied in an actual financial planning investment decision (2-4 pages).
  4. Include some research on cryptocurrency and financial technology (FinTech).

Include both a title and references page (not counted in the 7- to 10-page length).

Your paper may be longer than 10 pages if necessary, to illustrate points intended and must be in a Word document. Calculations are not required for this assignment. If you wish to include calculations to illustrate your points, include them in a table within your paper and be sure to submit only one document to be graded in response to this assignment. You must use at least 12 references, at least 10 of which should be scholarly/peer-reviewed. Your references and your paper must be formatted in accordance with APA guidelines in the CSU Global Writing Center. (Links to an external site.) Examine the Portfolio Project grading rubric for this assignment to see how you will be graded.
