Use of children’s literature for teaching EFL speaking skills at the preschool level

Learning English as a foreign language from an early age is supported in Montenegro, where the children at the age of 3 start learning English in kindergartens. Previous research suggests that basic speaking activities in the classroom from an early age can support young learners in acquiring a new language. Therefore, this study investigates how teachers select and use children’s literature in EFL teaching for ages 4-6. Five kindergarten EFL teachers participated in this qualitative study. Empirical data was collected through structured interviews. The results show that teachers express a positive attitude towards using children’s literature to teach preschool speaking skills for EFL. They also suggest several essential factors when choosing literature-based teaching material and for teaching the language skills investigated in this research. However, the results also indicate that teachers face challenges with young learners due to pronunciation, especially with 4-year-old learners. Despite the pronunciation constraints, the teachers are using children’s literature because of the benefits, such as acquiring vocabulary and getting to know an authentic language, that learners can use in the classroom and in real-life situations.
