Case Study

Learning Objectives

  • Perform independent research to locate and identify two appropriate counselling assessments for their client.
  • Understand and explain the psychometric properties of two assessments.
  • Understand ethical and multicultural issues within assessment.
  • Explain how the assessment can further enhance clinical knowledge and treatment in counselling.

Purpose

  • This activity will allow students to comprehensively research and examine two structured assessments. The assignment will assist them in selecting an evidence-based assessment and understanding its comprehensive usage within the counselling environment.

Instructions

For context regarding Assignment 2: For Assignment 3, your client will complete two assessments that you will score and interpret the results. You will explain the assessments and results to them within the assignment.

For Assignment 2, you will conduct research on two assessments from the list of approved assessments located in the section of the Syllabus “Resources for Assessment Tools Completed in the Course” and use the template to gather relevant information. Before providing the assessments to your client, it is important to critique and understand your assessment choices.

Please use the Assignment 2 Template.

For each assessment used, you will determine the following based on evidence/research:

  • general information and purpose of the assessment.
  • permission of use/copyright (sentence or two regarding author or assessment permissions –This information may be found within the publisher’s website, within the research article explaining the assessment(s), or within the author’s website).
  • psychometrics of the assessment -it must be a reliable and valid instrument, what does this tell the clinician?
  • ethical and multicultural considerations – for example, has it been validated with a variety of populations for use? Is it recommended for certain populations or settings?
  • therapist decision – how will this enhance your future treatment decisions?

This assignment will allow you to research further information to assist with Assignment 3. You will use a minimum of 3 peer-reviewed resources to complete Assignment 2.

Structure

  • Required components: Title page, template, references.
  • Length of Assignment: The text body of paper (i.e., not including references or title page) should consist of a minimum of 500 words (generally 2-3 double-spaced pages, font style Times New Roman font-size: 12).
  • Format: Please, format your assignment in Word (files with extension .doc or .docx), or Rich Text Format (files with extension .rtf).
  • References: minimum of 3.

Considerations:

Consider the information obtained in your initial assessment (Assignment 1). What will assist in further enhancing your knowledge or confirming your knowledge from that assessment?

See “Resources for Assessment Tools Completed in the Course” in the syllabus for further information on free, approved assessments that will meet the requirements for this assignment.

Your assessments must be reliable and valid.

Each assessment should examine a different construct, symptom, or behaviour (such as anxiety, depression, substance use, sleep, etc).

Assignment 1 Evaluation 7.75/15

Background is disproportionally long but did not mention any BC-specific issues regarding Indigenous health inequalities. It seems that you do not understand the requirements for this assignment and what the 3Is framework is. What are the ideas, institutions (structures, rules, regulations), and interests you have identified? and How do these ideas, institutions, and interests contribute to the challenge? Title – 0.5/0.5 Background – 2.5/5 Analysis (3Is)- 0/4 Analysis (CHA) – 3/3 Writing quality – 1/1.5 Referencing – 0.75/1

Assignment 2 will build on the research you did in Assignment 1. Having described and analyzed a problem in Assignment 1 you will now explore and evaluate potential solutions.

Your assignment must accomplish the following:

  • Consider options to address the problem:
    • Using the Control Knobs framework consider the full range of possible policy approaches. You must discuss all five control knobs.
  • Identify three examples of relevant policy approaches have already been tried (in Canada or internationally):
    • Describe the approaches taken and how they might be adopted to solve the problem you’ve identified
    • Describe and evaluate any evidence of the likely effect of these approach
  • Recommendations for a path forward, based on the discussion above evidence, including:
    • Your argument for one or more possible approaches
    • An explanation of how the 3-Is may help inform the approach

If you have chosen to change topics between assignment 1 and assignment 2, we also ask that you provide a brief (no more than 1-2 paragraphs) summary of the problem, relevant background, application of the 3-I framework, and connections between the problem and the Canada Health Act, such as you would’ve supplied in assignment 1. This summary will not be graded but will useful context for the TMs when they are marking.

You must also include a title page with a title and word count.

You should include in-text citations and a reference list using the Vancouver style. We recommend you identify and review between 7 and 12 high-quality citations to support your background and analysis.

The structure and organization of your assignment is up to you, but we strongly suggest using headings and subheadings to guide the reader. These may correspond to the bullet points above but should be adapted to fit your topic. Your analysis of policy options (Assignment 2) should be no more than 1,500 words. We recommend you allocate roughly a third of this length to each of the three main bullet points above.

Please upload your assignment on Canvas by 11:59 on the due date. Please append this to Assignment 1 for a total word count of no more than 3,000 words in the version you submit to Canvas.

Research Paper

video of Omar or Grace

During our Live Instructor Session last, we briefly discussed your final paper due Sunday at the end of Unit 10. This paper will integrate theory, research literature, and a case conceptualization with planning and counselling interventions. This will be based on a choice between two case studies within the MACP Skills Lab under Module 12.

You have your choice between Omar or Grace

PLEASE PAY ATTENTION – ANY OTHER CASES CHOSEN ACCIDENTALLY OR INTENTIONALLY WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AND WILL EARN A ZERO.

Also consider your choice of theories which include:

  • PCT
  • SFT
  • CBT
  • Family Therapy

You may also entertain and use those within the Sperry and Sperry text. If you want to use any other theory, please email me to discuss.

Do not incorporate two theories together. Keep this easy on yourself. If you want to do a more specific theory under the umbrella of a more major theory, such as REBT or MCBT, etc. please email me to discuss.

The paper needs to be 10-12 pages, double-spaced, not including title page and references. Do not go over the maximum page count – work toward conciseness. You are to use strict 7th Ed. APA style. A brief introduction and conclusion are required. As per guidelines, please do not use a running head. The use of 12 pt. Times New Roman is highly encouraged. Do not add an abstract, any appendixes, or table of contents. There is no template for this paper.

Your paper should include:

  • Introduction
  • Client Background and Context
  • An explanation of the theoretical framework chosen – you can consider any theory listed above that is appropriate for your chosen client. Please explain why it was chosen and its relevance to the client. Use backup and support – your choices are only as good as your evidence.
  • Preliminary assessment/case conceptualization – you will discuss possible assessment processes within the case conceptualization. You will also discuss the client’s presenting issues and counseling goals based on the theory chosen and the research supporting that choice.
  • Topical literature review which is to address but not exceed the issues related to the client – this means do not make up anything that is not already in the description. Do not make assumptions. Use only what you know supplied in the case itself. You will do this review in relevance to the topics surrounding this client, with a summary of key point integrated by theme. Please pay attention to the flow here – making an outline before you begin your paper is a great starting point.
  • References need to include at least 10 recent (last 10 years only) peer-reviewed sources. Please do not utilize references simply to fill space. Use references as a tool to enhance your paper and lend credibility to your conceptualization. All sources must be cited within your paper and be present in your references. All references should be cited within your paper. In ADDITION to the 10 additional peer reviewed resources, you may cite any of the articles in the course readings and your texts.

Please be mindful of the rubric:

1. Client Background and Context (5%)/5
2. Theoretical Framework/Description of Relevant Theory (15%)/15
3. Preliminary Assessments and Diagnosis (10%)/10
4. Case Conceptualization including Treatment Plan and Goals (20%)/20
5. Literature Review – Justification of Choices Made, Themes Presented by Client (20%)/20
6. References – Relevant and Recent (15%)/15
7. Writing Style – Clarity, Accuracy, Consistency, and APA Style (15%)/15

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU MUST GIVE CREDIT TO ANY ASSESSMENTS AND/OR CONCEPTUALIZATION GUIDANCE YOU USE AS A GUIDE

Learning Objectives

  • To integrate theory into a case study.
  • To research literature in support of a case conceptualization.
  • To implement case conceptualization, planning, and counseling interventions within a case study.
  • To identify how diversity, cultural and contextual frameworks, and factors influence conceptualization, goal setting, and treatment.

Purpose

This activity is designed to prepare students in conceptualizing a case that includes client background and context, relevant theoretical framework, preliminary assessments, and summaries of client’s presenting issues and goals. This activity is also designed to incorporate research and evidence based practices to support choices in a case conceptualization.

Instructions

Students will engage in formulating a case conceptualization for one case study provided by the professor. Please be mindful of details:

1) The case study to be used is dictated by your professor. SHOULD YOU CHOSE A CASE STUDY THAT IS NOT DICTATED BY YOUR PROFESSOR AS AN APPROVED CASE STUDY TO USE, YOU WILL RECEIVE A ZERO ON THE ASSIGNMENT.

2) The theory/frameworks used are to be ones found in the classroom and Young (2021) and Sperry and Sperry (2020) texts ONLY. These may include Solution Focused, Cognitive-Behavioral Theory, Person Centered, Biopsychosocial, Time Limited Dynamic Psychotherapy, Adlerian, and ACT. Should you wish to use another theory, you MUST get permission from your teacher. It is expected that you use the theory that best fits the case study – you are looking for alignment between client issues and the scientific evidence based practices. IF ANOTHER THEORY IS CHOSEN THAT IS NOT LISTED HERE AND/OR HAS NOT BEEN APPROVED BY YOUR PROFESSOR, YOU WILL RECEIVE A ZERO ON THE ASSIGNMENT.

The case conceptualization will include client background and context, the selection of one (1) major counselling theory as the theoretical framework to illustrate the ability to identify how the client’s difficulties (specifically symptoms and problems in living) have developed and been maintained. Students will also identify theoretically-driven treatment goals with specific interventions (techniques) utilized in counselling to facilitate the client’s progress in treatment. Students will engage in a topical literature review of the current research that relates to the client’s presenting issue and background.

In order to complete this paper, watch Module 6: Case Conceptualization in the MACP Skills Learning Lab BEFORE preparing and designing your paper.

The student will provide the following pieces in the final project:

  1. Introduction: Write a brief introductory paragraph that prepares the reader by identifying the purpose of the paper and providing the organization of the paper
  2. Client Background and Context: Describe the client and client’s history as provided in the case study. Do not add extra information. Only work with what you know. Briefly describe the client’s presenting issues and concerns that are provided in the case study. All symptoms are to be clearly identified.

  3. Theoretical Framework: Identify and describe one counselling theory that provides the theoretical foundation for the treatment plan for counselling the client. Summarize the rationale for the selected counselling theory, incorporating the theory’s philosophy and constructs Utilize research that supports and provides a rationale for the selected theory and incorporates the theory’s overarching philosophy. Consider the following points in your decision-making process for selecting and justifying the chosen counselling theory:
    • What population/problem was it created to address? What are the underlying philosophies?
    • What propositions/ideas are at the foundation of the theory?
    • How does the theory describe a person’s distress?
    • How does the theory describe how a person moves from psychopathology to health?
    • Given the theory you have described, how do you as the counsellor understand the client’s distress?
  4. Preliminary Assessment/Case Conceptualization:
    1. Assessment: Consider a preliminary assessment of the client based on the symptoms they are experiencing with the use of research. Justify a diagnostic impression fully based on presenting concerns and symptoms (for example, depression, anxiety, adjustment disorder, panic disorder, eating disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, etc.). Using research, identify assessment tools that can be used to uphold/explore the diagnostic  impression/assessment rational as well as explore issues and symptoms presented by client. Discuss the rationale of assessments selected and how the client was considered in the selection of assessment instruments.
    2. Case Conceptualization: Explore case conceptualizations within Sperry and Sperry (2020) as guidance. Your formulation may be presented in a chart as in Sperry and Sperry (2020) or as a narrative. As part of the conceptualization, present the client’s treatment plan to address the client’s presenting issues and concerns. Include the frequency of counselling sessions, what they will entail, and treatment interventions involved. Identify 1-2 long term goals. What makes these goals feasible and sufficient to address the client’s presenting issues and concerns? Identify the interventions to be utilized in counselling sessions with the client that align with the selected counselling theory and the long-term treatment goals. How are these interventions appropriate and specific to the client at this time? Provide empirical or professional literature support the selection of the interventions.
  5. Topical Literature Review: Throughout your paper, you are expected to support your work with empirical and/or professional literature. However, in this section, specifically, your focus will be on the research used to support your many decisions thus far as well as the considerations of the relevancy to your client and to the themes of your client’s case conceptualization. This is the time to dig in deeper to the literature. Do not repeat information already explored in other areas of your paper. Consider this reveiw an extension of the research and dig in deeper to the nuances of your client within the case study. Address the questions below:
  • What research supports your plan for this client?
  • What themes are present in this case that are specific to this client? How do they correlate to the client, the theory chosen, and the research used?
  • What research upholds the treatment and goals in your case conceptualization?
  • Share research that upholds the correlations between the client’s case, the theory chosen, the components of the treatment plan, and the interventions chosen.
  • Again, DO NOT REPEAT information already explored in other areas. Consider digging deep to look at the connection between your unique client and the research.

Structure

  • Required components: Title page, reference page. An introduction and conclusion are required. Do not add an abstract, appendixes, or table of contents. Do not use a running head.
  • Length of Assignment: The text body of paper (i.e., not including references or title page) should consist of approximately 3,000 words, (i.e., 10-12 double-spaced typed pages, Times New Roman font size: 12).
  • Format: Please format your assignment in Word (files with extension .doc or .docx)
  • References: 10 recent (last 10 years), peer-reviewed journal articles must be included. All sources must be cited within your paper and be present in your references. All references should be cited within your paper. In ADDITION to the 10 additional peer reviewed resources, you may cite any of the articles in the course readings and your texts.

Considerations

Please use the rubric as a guide. Write succinctly and from first person point of view – you are the counselor of this client case study.

Resources

Any sources used to support your written narrative should be cited using correct APA format. Although Wikipedia can be a useful starting place to gather very general information no Wikipedia references will be accepted as scholarly citations.

Use the Yorkville University Library and the EBSCO tool for academic search. It is important to select credible sources for assignments. This resource will assist students in determining which sources are credible: https://myyu.ca/ask/credible-source-guide/

Evaluation

The following rubric indicates those areas you should be focusing on in preparing your assignment, and how the professor will weigh these components relative to one another.
