Cognitive Development Learning Theories

Have you ever wondered how students learn? Well, there are many learning theorists that have proposed the process in which one acquires new knowledge and each one significantly contributes to the process of cognitive development. Read Chapter 2 of our text to gain a greater understanding of cognitive development that provides teachers with the knowledge of creating developmentally appropriate practices in the classroom. In analyzing the implications of cognitive development on student learning, choose one of the following questions:

  • Describe Piaget’s answers for the primary biological questions he asked: How do children adapt? How can development be classified? Next, share whether or not you agree with Piaget. Then, describe the value for teachers in understanding Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development. Apply this to your own role as a future educator.
  • Give an example of what is meant by Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development (ZPD). Explain how your example fully illustrates your understanding of ZPD. Also, describe at least two educational implications of this concept. Use the concept of scaffolding in your answer.

Effective Teacher

Educational psychology serves as the bridge between theory and practice in our classrooms. Best practices in the classroom stem from the research and developed theories about how we learn and behave which is the driving force that guides how we teach, motivate, and assess our students. The research of educational psychology is what supports our continually improvement in what constitutes effective teaching and learning.

In Chapter 1 of the text, Table 1.1 displays core INTASC principles that reflect the characteristics of a competent teacher. Be sure to use the text to support your response.

  • Select two of the ten principles and discuss how you currently exhibit these principles. Why might the two selected principles be considered essential elements of teaching?
  • Select two of the ten principles and discuss why they reflect areas of needed growth as you work towards becoming an educator. What will you do to improve these areas?

Creating a Career Development Program

Instructions
As the director of learning and development, you have been tasked with creating a career development program for the senior sales team of your organization. You currently support five individuals on the senior sales team. Each team member has aspirations of becoming either a senior sales manager, sales director, or vice president of sales. None of the team members have any experience in leading a team, but they show some potential for management. Choose one of the roles above (i.e., senior sales manager, sales director, or vice president of sales), and create a PowerPoint presentation outlining a career development program for the employee. In your PowerPoint, please include the elements below.
Describe skills needed to be successful in the desired role.
Discuss three to four training and developmental interventions needed to gain the skills to be successful in the desired role, and provide a timeframe of completion for each intervention. For example, a job rotation program should be completed in 60 to 90 days, and an apprenticeship should be completed in 2 years.
Explain the outcomes of each developmental intervention. For example, “Through this job rotation exercise, you will be able to effectively manage a virtual team.”
Your presentation must be at least 10 slides in length, not counting the title and reference slides. You are required to use at least one outside source and to utilize the notes section within PowerPoint. Within the notes section, include additional explanations for each slide. As you create your presentation, keep in mind that you are presenting for executives at your organization. All sources used, including the required unit resources, must be cited and referenced according to APA guidelines.

Module Overview

The essence of marketing strategy is successfully relating the strengths of an organization to its environment. As the horizons of marketers have expanded from domestic to regional and global, so too have the horizons of competitors. The reality in almost every industry today—including home furnishings—is global competition. This fact of life puts an organization under increasing pressure to master techniques for conducting industry analysis and competitor analysis, and understanding competitive advantage at both the industry and national levels. These topics are covered in detail in this module. Also, this module focuses on the integration of each element of the marketing mix into a total plan that addresses opportunities and threats in the global marketing environment.

Unilever, the global food and consumer packaged goods powerhouse, markets a brand portfolio that includes such well-known names as Axe, Ben & Jerry’s, Dove, Hellmann’s, and Lipton. The company has approximately 200,000 employees and annual sales of $57 billion; Unilever can trace its roots, in part, to the northern English town of Port Sunlight on the River Mersey. Before retiring, Unilever Group Chief Executive Patrick Cescau wanted to reconnect the company with its heritage of sustainability and concern for the environment (see Exhibit 17-1). These and other values reflect Unilever’s philosophy of “doing well by doing good.” Cescau’s vision of “doing well by doing good” manifested itself in other ways, too. For example, he guided the company’s detergent business toward using fewer chemicals and less water, plastic, and packaging. Business leaders today must be capable of articulating a coherent global vision and strategy that integrates global efficiency, local responsiveness, and leverage. The leader is the architect of an organization design that is appropriate for the company’s strategy. The leader must ensure that the organization takes a proactive approach to corporate social responsibility.
