Operational Audit & Report

Plan, develop, conduct and report on an operational audit of indoor air quality (IAQ) at your residence.

Resource materials on indoor air quality found on the Environmental Protection Agency’s official website and /or peer reviewed sources are to be used to craft an operational audit checklist suitable for assessing IAQ in a residence.

Your IAQ audit checklist is used to conduct an operational audit of IAQ in your residence. No physical samples should be collected as part of your IAQ residential assessment. No air quality data or instrument readings such as temperature or humidity should be collected or assumed. This audit should be comprised of observations only.

Prepare and submit a report of your operational audit of IAQ in your residence.

The Report shall be in APA format and meet the following guidelines:

  1. The Report shall include the following major sections:
  2. Title page – Title connects well with report thesis.
  3. Introduction – Identifies the purpose for the report and states the thesis or research question. The length of the Introduction section should be about one page.
  4. Background – Provides an overview of the topic. For example, if your assessment looks at water intrusion then the background would be expected to link water intrusion to mold growth. References should be provided for facts used in this section. The length of the Background section should be about 2 pages.
  5. Method – This section describes how you will answer your research question. For this report the source for IAQ information used to craft your checklist shall be identified, the approach you took to fashion your checklist shall be described, and how you intend to use your checklist shall detailed. No physical samples shall be taken. The length of the Method section should be about one page.
  6. Results – This section describes what you found. Where appropriate text can be accompanied by tabular data. This length of the Results section should be about 2 pages.
  7. Findings – This section describes your conclusions and recommendations based your results. This length of the Findings section should be about one page. * See note below!
  8. References – Reference list shall be formatted in accordance with APA guidelines. APA in-text citations should be included in the body of the report to identify cited sources.
  9. Appendices – Field completed checklist(s).

The Operational Audit Report should be 7 to 10 pages in length not including the Title Page, References, and Appendices.

The major sections recommended in IAQ report, including Background, Method, Results, and Findings, are Level 1 APA Headings. The Introduction section is not named with a section header.

Headings

APA Style uses a unique headings system to separate and classify paper sections. There are 5 heading levels in APA. The 6th edition of the APA manual revises and simplifies previous heading guidelines. Regardless of the number of levels, always use the headings in order, beginning with level 1. The format of each level is illustrated below:

APA Headings
Level  Format
1   Centered, Boldface, Uppercase and Lowercase Headings
2Left-aligned, Boldface, Uppercase and Lowercase Heading
3  Indented, boldface, lowercase heading with a period. Begin body text after the period.
4  Indented, boldface, italicized, lowercase heading with a period. Begin body text after the period.
5  Indented, italicized, lowercase heading with a period. Begin body text after the period.

 * The University of West Florida and the course instructor take no responsibility for conclusions you draw or do not draw, and/or actions you take or do not take as a result of conducting this limited IAQ operational audit. This assignment is intended to demonstrate the principles of operational auditing and is NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive assessment of indoor air quality in your residence. Questions or concerns arising out of this limited IAQ operational audit should be directed to qualified IAQ professionals, such as employed at Health Departments or IAQ Consulting Companies. Comments offered by the instructor on your audit plan or report should not be taken as directives to take or not take actions that are costly or could impact health.
