Introduction: For this project you will be asked to describe a neighborhood using data from the Census. The purpose of this project is to familiarize you with census data and give you the opportunity to use data to tell a story about a neighborhood. This project can be broken into following steps:
Step 1: Select the neighborhood you would like to describe. (The neighborhood I select is 3911 Tuscany Ct, which is located in Arlington, Texas) For this project, your neighborhood will be defined by a census tract. Once you have selected your census tract, you should determine what county the census tract is located in. Write a short introduction that explains where your neighborhood is located (include a map and paste it to the document you will submit), with a brief physical description. This step should take approximately 1/2 page.
Step 2: Construct the Population Change from 2010 to 2019 for your census tract compared to the county. Go to https://data.census.gov/cedsci/ for gathering data. Here is an example and your table should look exactly like the example except the data and names.
After you construct your table, write 2-3 paragraphs to describe the information on table. Potential things you can write about with your table: What proportion of county population is located within the census tract? Is the area growing? Is the neighborhood growing just as fast as the surrounding area? Can you provide any reason for the growth or lack of growth? The writing for this step should take approximately 1 page.
Step 3: Construct the Year Housing is Built – Divided into Owner-Occupied and Renter-Occupied (using the 2019 ACS). Go to https://data.census.gov/cedsci/ for gathering data. Here is an example and your table should look exactly like the example except the data and names.
After you construct your table, write 2-3 paragraphs to describe the information on table. Potential things you can write about with your table: Do rent their homes? When was the majority of the housing know, would you classify this as an urban or rural area? People within this census tract tend to own or built? Given this information and what you. The writing for this step should take approximately 1 page.
Step 4: One (1) Self-Selected Tables or Figures
You can construct either a table or a figure for the final data exposition. You’re free to choose any data source, including the Census, and explore any topic that explains something about your neighborhood. But only use the data from https://data.census.gov/cedsci/
Suggested topics are employment, ethnicity, school quality, crime, or any other topic you may find interesting. This is your opportunity to learn about your neighborhood from the viewpoint of Urban Economics and then explain to me what you found.
A suggestion is to pay attention to papers and topics that we cover in class and try to apply something you’ve learned as you create your tables/figures. Can you tell me something about urban sprawl by looking at certain data? Or something about housing prices and poverty? Feel free to be creative and ask me questions. The two tables/figures can be used jointly or separately to illustrate your point. The writing for this part should be approximately 1.5 page.
Final Note about this project:
There is no conclusion needed for this project.
You can use Excel to construct your tables, but you need take a screenshot of that table and paste it to the document with the words. For submission, you need to submit both files. OR you can use word document to construct the table to make it a single file.
Only use the data form the census website, no other data is allowed. There is no other research needed for this project. You writing should be completely your own, do not cite others’ writing.
Clear label each part of your project before submitting: Introduction, Table I, Table II, Table III/Figure
