Final Project: Health Campaign Portfolio

Assignment Value: 75 points

Assignment Introduction

You are tasked with creating a portfolio website that describes your health campaign. This website will provide an overview of the project–what the project is, why you chose the topic, why it’s important, what your goals and objectives are, etc–as well as a collection of designed messages that you have created for your campaign. You will want to make this as professional as possible, so that it will be useful for you when you want to pursue future opportunities.

If you have never made a website before, I recommend using Wix. It will provide you with the ability to create a free website, which you can customize–add your own text, images, videos, etc–and also the ability to upgrade to additional features (for a monthly fee of $10-$25, depending on what you want to do).

Here is a useful tutorial for how to make a website using Wix.

If you already have your own website, you are free to create a portfolio page or set of pages within your own site.

Because a key objective of this project is to show future employers what you can do, write with them in mind. Do not make vague references to “this class” or “our book.” The creativity and hard work you invest in this will be an advantage to you for years to come. Aim to create clear, impressive components in a professional-quality portfolio you will use for many years!

Assignment Instructions

Your portfolio website should include all of the following elements. You can include additional elements if you like, but you must meet these minimum requirements. Going above and beyond the minimum requirements will typically result in a better grade.

You can create one single website page for your portfolio, or you can create multiple, separate pages. You decide what works best, what looks best, what design layout communicates most effectively.

Project Overview (final version)

250 word explanation of your project, the people and organization(s) involved, and the importance of the project.

Goals, Objectives, and Results

Include all goals and objectives and provide measurements reflecting how well you were able to meet each goal.

Campaign Messages and Activities

The bulk of this final project will include two parts:

Designing and creating at least FOUR different examples of designed messages, using at least TWO different communication channels.

Justifying your design choices: why are the messages that you’ve created the best possible ways to communicate to your audience?

This part of the portfolio can look many ways, depending on the nature of your project and your personal preferences.

REQUIRED: Copies of work you produced: media messages, technical documents, videos, etc.

You should include at least four different examples of designed messages. You should use at least two different communication channels across your message examples.

Example of different communication channels: you might create 1 digital flyer or infographic, 1 YouTube video, and 1 website page

REQUIRED: 150-200 word explanation/justification for your design choices for each of your messages. In that explanation, you will discuss why you chose the specific communication channel, and you will discuss your design choices (why each element of the message was included, why you chose certain color schemes, why you chose to layout or organize the message in the way you did, etc.). You should answer the following questions:

Why did you choose the channel(s) of communication for each message?

What was the tone, or the “voice” of your messages?

How did you establish credibility in your messaging? Be sure to discuss how you used expertise, trustworthiness, and (if necessary) “source homophilly”

Refer to Chapter 14 for a review of these terms

How did you avoid “scapegoating” or “stigmatizing” people in your messaging?

For each message, justify how you incorporated AT LEAST ONE of the following theories into your message design:

Health Belief Model

Social Cognitive Theory

Theory of Reasoned Action

Theory of Planned Behavior

Transtheoretical Model

Critical-Cultural Model

Each messages should have a Framing Device. Explain for each message whether you used a gain-frame appeal, or a loss-frame appeal, and why.

Each message should be either informational or narrative. Explain for each messages why you chose one over the other (or how you mixed elements of both).

For each message, explain how you incorporated either LOGICAL appeals, or EMOTIONAL appeals (either positive-affect appeals or negative-affect appeals)

REQUIRED: Descriptions of key activities that you completed along the way

OPTIONAL: Photos of you at work and/or community members involved (optional)

OPTIONAL: Anything else that will showcase the work you did.
