Topic 1

Describe your personal experience with individuals who self-identify as Native American, American Indian, Alaska Native or First Nations.

• If you believe that you have no experience then you should talk about the fact that your experience is solely through the media and school and how your perception of the Native Americans has been shaped by these institutions.

Conduct an online search using the terms “American Indian”, “Native American”, “American Indian families” and “Native American families” in addition to some terms frequently used to describe other people and communities living within the United States of America (e.g. (“African American”, “Hispanic American”, “Asian American”, “White American”, “African American families“, “Hispanic American families“, “Asian American families“, “White American families”)  

• Describe the images you found that resulted from your search.
• What patterns emerged for American Indians, Native Americans and their families?
• How did these patterns differ from those associated with one of the other groups?
• Are you surprised by these images or do they coincide with your understanding of American Indian, Alaska Native and Native American people/communities?
