Task 3 requires you to choose one media moment from the three you outlined last week. By focussing on one moment, you can pursue a deeper and more refined analysis.
For Task 3 in your walkthrough journal, please provide the following:
- An in-depth description of the moment you have chosen, including its significance for understanding the nature of your media habits.
- A discussion of the concepts from the course you will use to further develop your analysis for your script. Your discussion should explain why you’ve proposed these concepts in particular to help frame your analysis.
How do you choose which moment to focus on?
It is important to think carefully about your media life and which moment might best support more in-depth analysis for your script. To make this decision, you need to think strategically.
You need a moment that will give you plenty of opportunities – both in the walkthrough and the script – to demonstrate insight into relationships between media and society. It will need to be a moment that allows you to use key concepts and arguments we’ve examined in the course.
Key considerations
Here are some key things you should consider:
- Is this moment a particularly interesting/surprising/rich example of your media use?
- How well does this moment connect with one or two of the key ideas or arguments from the course? It might confirm, contradict, or complicate a key argument or concept we’ve examined. Whether it confirms or complicates, it must give you a chance to demonstrate your insight into the material covered in the course.
All of the concepts we’ve examined in the course are tools that help to answer the fundamental question of COMU1120:
How do media shape our everyday human experience and the societies we live in?
In particular, the question of meaning-making and power has threaded its way throughout most aspects of COMU1120. We’ve also spent quite a while these last few weeks thinking about the changing nature of our engagement with media devices, platforms, and processes of content production and distribution.
So we might modify our core question for this current assignment:
How does my walkthrough moment reveal how media affect our human experience and social relationships?
In the next step, we’ll get a firmer handle on these questions by listening to a script written and produced by a student partner, Odette.
The script was the outcome of Odette’s walkthrough research, and her engagement with the ideas and arguments from the course. This example should help you think ahead to the script you would like to write, and how the walkthrough moment you work on here will help you get there.
Task 3: Critically Reflecting on your Media Life
Choose one moment on which to focus the rest of the project. For this moment, please provide the following:
- An in-depth description of the moment you have chosen, including its significance for understanding the nature of your media habits.
- A discussion of what concepts from the course you propose to use to further develop your analysis for your final audio script. Your discussion should explain why you’ve proposed these concepts in particular as frameworks for analysis.
Please write about 150 words for each point, that is, 300 words in total.
