What a difference a decade makes. In the 1920s, the possibilities for unions and working-class political activism seemed to be at an all-time low. However, by the mid-to-late 1930s, labor unions were in a much stronger position to grow their power and numbers. What were the major developments and changes that created the conditions for labor unions and worker power to grow in the 1930s and beyond? In this essay, you should have an argument that tries to answer this question. Your paper should take the reader from the 1920s to the mid-to-late 1930s while elaborating on the changes and shifts that you believe made – by the mid-to-late 1930s – the strong growth of the US labor movement and worker power more possible and real.
Paper requirements:
- 4 to 5-page, double-spaced paper in 12-point font
- You should be sure to:
- 1) make a clear argument that responds to the question. This argument should drive the analysis of your paper.
- 2) display your understanding of the history and issues that the paper questions relates to
- 3) base your claims on the assigned readings, documents, and other materials covered in class during weeks 10 through 13.
- You must include citations of readings and lectures (you can use footnotes, endnotes, or parenthesis – whatever you prefer, as long as I know where you’re getting your information). I discourage you from citing readings from outside of class. READINGS ATTACHED!!! Don’t need to use all sources.
