Project Two – Scale Block Plan and Beginning SketchUp Environment: Walls & Floor
Description: Carefully read this handout and the notes taken in class to complete this project. Students will create a hand drawn block plan, to scale with
dimensions, on graph paper to begin. Students will use the plan dimensions and layout to begin the creation of the 3D SketchUp environment. Walls,
floor, window, door, and entry spaces, architectural elements such as columns, niches, or wall bump-outs will be completed.
STEP ONE:
l Draw Thumbnails
l Begin by laying out a few ideas in pencil, in a small thumbnail format on paper. Explore different layout options until you are satisfied with the
overall layout and placement of elements in the space.
STEP TWO:
l Create a Block Plan on Graph Paper.
l Use pencil and ruler on graph paper to create a floor plan of the space dimensions at the appropriate scale.
l Draw the architectural details and individual project elements in the space in plan view. There does not have to be much detail (blocks and circles
can be used to indicate the elements), but the size dimensions and scale should be accurate.
l Make sure that scale and dimensions/dimension lines are indicated on the page. Label elements or make notes so that the plan can be easily
understood.
l Dimensions and scale must be expressed in standard, architectural fashion: feet and inches and even fractions (1/2” = 1’, 1/4” = 1’, 1/8” = 1’, etc.)
l Keep in mind ADA requirements: 36” aisle space between fixtures, etc.)
STEP THREE:
l Begin SketchUp.
l Using the tools and techniques demonstrated in class, create the floor space, walls, architectural elements, windows and entryways first. Use
block or cylinder shapes to indicate placement of design elements.
l All objects created must be grouped or created as components.
STEP FOUR:
l Continue to add Details.
l Add materials and textures, as demonstrated in class.
STEP FIVE:
l Upload your homework files to your eLearning Drop Box before you come to class. Projects are due at the beginning of class. Any homework that is
not in the designated drop areas on the due date at the specified time, will be counted as late and receive 0 points, unless otherwise approved by
your Academic Advisor or Department Chairperson.
l There will not be time to upload homework to the eLearning Drop Box in class.
l Please make sure that you give yourself plenty of time to test that your files are uploaded correctly and able to be downloaded by the instructor
before you attend class. There will not be time to troubleshoot uploading or file problems in class.
l Don’t forget to bring the block plan on graph paper.
l Check it to make sure that your layout is effective and understandable, and that dimensions and scale are complete and properly indicated.
l Bring a pre-printed rubric to class with the WIP file. It should be filled out with your name, class info, and project name on it. There will not be time to
print and fill in rubrics in class.
