Each participant is required to write an analytical essay of 1,500 to 2,500 words (not including the bibliography) linking the domestic to the international context. The paper will comprise 35% of the final grade.
The paper should address the following:
Participants will be expected to choose a state and show how its domestic context influences its international relations. This will demonstrate participant’s ability to assess how various internal situations can influence a state’s foreign policy.
The assignment will test participant’s ability to apply lessons learned over domestic and international contexts to the real world. For example participants can show how issues such as civil society, elections, and economic development can have powerful links between the domestic and international contexts.
Please note that you must not use this country (Jordan, Ukraine or Netherlands) in your presentation or analytical paper. Preferably use a country from Europe or Middle East.
papers will be evaluated based on the use of evidence, the logic of the structure, the quality and originality of the argument, and the written expression.
Learning outcomes for the Individual Paper:
• Analyze how the domestic context influences a state’s foreign policy.
• Assess some of the key factors (groups, individuals, regions, etc.) in the state that impact foreign policy.
• Analyze the role that institutions play in your state in both the domestic and international contexts.
