Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to identify common patterns of social behaviors within a specific social event or a social setting. Your writing will illustrate your ability to interpret social interactions using the content from units 1-3.
You will write a 5 page paper, (3) pages of content, (1) page title page, and (1) page reference page. (Your rubric states 3 pages but that does not include your title page and reference page which is mandatory for APA format).
Below you can choose option 1 or option 2, I understand some students are still quarantining and others may not be so pick whichever option just make sure all questions are answered and you have followed the rubric closely.
Note: Students will need to use Turnitin when they submit papers for this course. If you get flagged for having 25% or more unoriginality on you will need to fix your paper before submitting it. This is a plagiarism checker so make sure you correctly cite your work and give credit to authors of any terms/concepts, definitions, and statistics in your paper. If you submit a paper with 25% or over plagiarism you will receive a 0 so make sure you properly paraphrase and cite your work.
Option 1- Activity:
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are revising the guidelines for the Observation of Social Behaviors assignment.
In place of conducting a participant observation activity,
- Watch a movie, documentary, or a 10-minute YouTube video on a social event that includes interactions between people. (some options at the bottom)
- Watch any social distancing practices (if you go outside of your home) or news events on COVID-19 that includes human interactions. (observe at work or on your porch)
The time limit and the type of media is your choice. However, the video should be professional.
Option 2- Activity:
Conduct a participant observation procedure by observing a group/social event. The event could be a trip to a theme park, enjoying a play at a theater, or a dinner with family at a restaurant. It could also be attending a religious gathering, hanging out with friends at a coffee shop, attending a sports event like a baseball or a basketball game, celebrating a cultural holiday, or attending a meeting at your workplace.
After selecting which observation method to observe behaviors ( Option 1 or 2) then following the folowing:
Observe individuals and their interactions, and when scripting your paper, fulfill the requirements listed below.
- First, write a few sentences about the video: its title, how long it was, and why you chose it.
- Next, summarize your observations and describe the common interaction patterns between the individuals.
- Note any behaviors that stand out.
- Your thoughts should illustrate how the observation activity facilitated your understanding of human behaviors.
- Be sure to include 2-3 relevant concepts from at least two different chapters from Units 1-3 when describing your observations.
- The paper should be at least three full pages, excluding the title and the references pages.

Option 4- Pick your own short film or movie or event. If you have access to view interactions in a park or in a virtual setting you can select that as well.
Some students have chosen to do this at work during their 15 minute, 30 minute, or hour long breaks. You can still do this option as well if you are an essential worker. Please do not expose yourself to harmful situations and practice social distancing.
Use APA format throughout the paper including for the Title page, and references and in-text citations.
Your paper also should be without grammar and spelling mistakes.
