NUR415 Discussion post:

Step 1: Post your response to the following questions in the discussion board:

This course covered topics that may have been new to you, or that you don’t usually give much thought.

  • Talk about three things from the course material that influenced how you think and/or will practice as a nurse within the health care system.
  • What would you like to learn more about?

Step 2: Read other students’ posts and respond to at least two of them. You are not required to provide research, a reference, or in-text citations. Use your professional opinion to answer the questions

Student #1:

I have never really been involved much with politics, but with this class, it has made me realize how much we are involved in politics as a nurse and not really know it. We advocate for our patients on a daily bases. I need to take it a step further and get engaged in political advocacy. I will make sure my patients are being well educated on doctor’s orders, taking medication, and really encouraging my patients to be engaged in their care. Make sure to continue building a relationship with my patients so that they can feel comfortable talking to me if they are struggling with filling medications or even their living situations, then make sure I get them the resources they need. I didn’t realize nurses made such an impact when sitting on boards. So, that is one thing that I would like to learn more about is getting more involved in the union organization that we have at my hospital.

This course has broadened and enlightened the perception I had about nursing in various ways. One of the areas that I did not know much about is that some professional organizations, private and the federal government, play a significant role in passing policies that foster patient involvement. Therefore, as a nurse, I must encourage and educate patients to get involved and pass these policies to their advantage. In addition to patient participation, nurses alike should support organizations that advocate for nurses to formulate policies and get involved in formulating and implementing these policies. Bedside nurses are more informed of areas that need changes or support for better and quality patient outcomes, hence vital to formulating policies to include the matters of concern.
Human trafficking is another area that I had narrow knowledge in. I never imagined it happens in such a high magnitude in the United States of America (USA) because of the advanced technology in terms of tracing the victims and these criminals. The media focus primarily on human trafficking from other countries into the USA. This topic was heartbreaking in week six of this class. I have never worked in a hospital or community health center where most of these victims present. I love geriatrics, so I have primarily been working in long-term care facilities and rehabilitation facilities. I have never taken care of victims of human trafficking, so I feel this is an area I need to search to know more about how better to identify these victims and what to do or advocate for them as a nurse.

NUR425 Discussion Post

Step 1: In your initial post to this discussion forum, respond to the following prompts. Include personal and practice-related experiences or observations as examples that support your response.

Propose a new community health program that could address a population-level health need. Include the following points:

  • A description of the health need
  • An explanation of the program, including the community health agency that would administer it
  • Hypothesize potential health benefits for the population if the program was implemented. Support your opinion with evidence (impact of similar programs or other evidence)

Step 2: Your initial post should be 2-3 paragraphs in length. In addition to your original post, be sure to provide a meaningful response to at least two of your peers’ posts. Read other students’ postings and respond to at least two other students’ postings. What else would you like to know about this setting? Speculate on how you could expand or enhance the community health nurse’s role and effectiveness in the community. Use a professional tone when interacting with your peers. Cite all of your references in APA 7th edition format.

Student#1: The population-level health need considered, in this case, is the need for financial support for the healthcare of the elderly population. Many the elderly are unable to receive the required healthcare for their ailments due to financial constraints. Many older adults face these financial difficulties due to various reasons, such as debts accumulated over past decades, and many are also paying student loans – theirs, their children, or grandchildren. With the ever-increasing healthcare cost and the increasing numbers in the elderly population, additional community programs aimed at addressing this need will come in handy. Currently, only about 20% of the seniors’ population is able to receive financial assistance in healthcare requirements. (Osborn, Squires, Doty, Sarnak, & Schneider, 2016).

A community health program that could address this health need is the creation of more local healthcare provider-based agencies, branched from the state agencies that would help devolve more federal funding for the healthcare cover of the seniors that require it. Many older adults and caregivers feel most comfortable discussing health and social issues with their health care provider. In this program, health care providers and the local agencies work hand-in-hand to have a more significant outreach. The local agencies deal with the funding part of the program, while the healthcare providers deal with identifying and reaching out to more seniors on the ground that need the support.

This program, if implemented, could potentially have various health benefits for the elderly population. One of these benefits is quality healthcare without the limitation of inadequate funds. An example of a similar program is Volunteers of America. The program supports the elderly through a series of service programs. They offer seniors benefits such as supplemental nutrition assistance programs, transportation, Medicare enrollment support, nursing care, and more benefits programs for low-income seniors. (Pearson, Quinn, Loganathan, Datta, Mace, & Grabowski, 2019).

Student #2:

The health need that I will discuss in this context is cancer. Across various communities, cancer tends to have a massive impact on the health of the public. The effects range from premature deaths to high costs associated with treatment, and an economic burden that results from a decline in productivity (Garg, 2016). Besides, the long-term effects of cancer treatment tend to take a toll at a population level. Though cancer has various impacts on different families and patients, a clear understanding of the effects it imposes on a large population can equip people with knowledge that will influence their practices. According to the American Institute of Cancer Research, consuming vegetables regularly, exercising, restricting oneself from red meat consumption, and alcohol can help prevent cancer (Campbell, 2017). Preventing cancer among a population is, therefore, possible through behavioral change.

The above argument, therefore, justifies the execution of preventative measures when controlling cancer among people. I will use the community cancer awareness program to administer the awareness process. To ensure the implementation of the strategies works, its vital to understand the beliefs of the population. Despite creating awareness being a significant way in which cancer can be controlled, equipping the community with knowledge of cancer is a key contributing factor when it comes to behavioral change (Campbell, 2017). Creating awareness helps in the early detection of cancer as people tend to go for screening. Besides, people are educated on the need to choose healthy lifestyles, since lifestyle is a crucial contributing factor to cancer. Creating awareness is the only way we can fight cancer, and if we decide not to speak out, fighting it can be tricky (Garg, 2016).
