SCIENCE CURRENT EVENT – ARTICLE SUMMARY

Article Guidelines:

  • Article published in the last six (6) months
  • Article may come from a variety of sources (e.g. magazine, newspaper, Internet)
    • Double check source and date of article (especially on the Internet)
  • A copy of the article (printout, etc.) should be included when assignment is complete`

Summary Guidelines: Summarize the entire article using formal voice. To write a good summary it is important to thoroughly understand the material you are working with. Consider the following steps:

  • Skim the text, noting in your mind the subheadings. If there are no subheadings, try to divide the text into sections. Consider WHY you have chosen the text. Try to determine what type of text (informational) you are dealing with. This can help you identify important information.
  • Read and annotate the text. See possible annotation method to the right. Also consider writing questions to the text.
  • In your own words, write down the main points of each section.
  • Write down the key supporting points for the main topic, but do not include minor detail.
  • Go through the process again making changes as appropriate.
