You must respond to both of the following questions in separate threads. Consider these questions with the information in your main exegetical passage and the textbooks in mind, but feel free to use other sources as needed to add to the conversation. Acknowledge which question is being answered (e.g., “Discussion: Tools for Hermeneutics, Question 1”), and restate the question within your response on the board. Post each thread as a new topic.
1. Using the principles found in chapter 7 of Grasping God’s Word and chapter 9 of Introduction to Biblical Interpretation, outline the basic steps for doing word studies for a biblical passage. Then apply those steps to the passage you chose for your exegetical paper. Offer a list of words and/or phrases that you intend to highlight in your final exegetical paper. Explain the importance and definition of these words with regards to your passage. Please be sure to cite your word study sources.
2. This assignment requires you to interact with chapter 2 of Grasping God’s Word and chapter 1 of Introduction to Biblical Interpretation (particularly the section on challenges to biblical interpretation). Using the information from these chapters (and with special focus on steps 2 and 3 of the Interpretive Journey discussed in Grasping God’s Word), give an overview of how the ancient context of your passage contrasts with a modern 21st century context (Step 2—Measuring the Width of the River to Cross). Then offer an outline the basic steps for finding the key principle(s) in the biblical text (Step 3—Crossing the Principlizing Bridge). Apply those steps to the passage you chose for your exegetical paper and offer a list of principles that you intend to investigate in your exegetical paper. Offer a discussion of the importance these two steps to a proper understanding of your text. Please be sure to cite any sources you may use.
