Scenario

For this project, you will peform in the role of a Health Information Management (HIM) Consultant for BSC Hospital.  You will be tasked to research and critically evaluate five Health Information Systems’(HIS) purpose, return on investments,  its effectiveness to capture patient history and its interoperablity to communicate patient information for the purpose of continuity of care.  After evaluating each HIS, you will be required to articulate your findings to the Board of Directors (BOD) at the next Town Hall meeting to propose two Health Information Systems by presenting the advanatages and disadvantages of all network components, applications, and the evolution of emerging healthcare information systems with supporting research. 

Directions

Using our scenario, you will organize your research and findings using the provided chart. You will then write a 750 – word essay that critically evaluates two HIS: one of your choice and one Electronic Medical Record/Electronic Health Record (EMR/EHR).  As you prepare to present your recommendations to the Board of Directors, you will develop a PowerPoint with Voiceover presentation examining two HIS to help influence the Board of Directors decision on which systems to use at BSC Hospital.

In order to articulate your proposal, be sure that you incorporate at least three scholary resources to help support  your recommedation and discuss the opportunities that can streamline patient care and business operations at the hospital.

Week 3: Health Information System Analysis Table

  • Due by the end of Week 3 at 11:59 pm, ET.

This week you will begin to conduct the HIS application and technology analysis of EMR/EHR and four other vendors (options are provided below).  Create a table that lists the benefits and challenges of the EMR/EHR and the four vendors you selected.  You will use the table to assist in the organization of information that will be delivered to the Board of Directors at the Town Hall Meeting. 

Note: You may select from the provided list of Health Information Systems or locate others of your choice to analyze and evaluate.

Week 4:  Health Information System Analysis Essay

In at least 750 – words, write an essay that critically evaluates and highlights the EMR/EHR one of the other HIS systems you chose above.  Be sure to provide a response to each of the following:

  • The purpose of  each HIS
  • Return on Investment of each HIS
  • Challenges/Barriers identified
  • Opportunities for continuity and business structure
  • Recommendation and Rationale

Week 5: Presentation to the Board of Directors

  • Due by the end of Week 5 at 11:59 pm, ET.

Using the information from the Health Information System Analysis essay, create a PowerPoint with Voice Over presentation, with at least 5 slides, but no more than 10 slides, that could be used in conjunction with your essay to present to the Board of Directors. Your presentation should include enough detail for the Board of Directors to understand the Health Information System and its relevance and the impact it will have on BSC Hospital’s operations and performances.  

Week 7.5: Reflection

  • Due by the end of Week 7.5 at 11:59 pm, ET.

For the final piece of your Portfolio Project, you will reflect upon the course and how it directly relates to your future workplace.


This reflection will be delivered as a Word document 1-2 pages in length.
