Narrative-
An oral health professional recently attended a continuing education course about advances in diagnostic testing using oral fluid (saliva). At the course, the individual received samples of test kits that use oral fluid to screen for various diseases. The oral health professional routinely collects oral fluid from patients to measure caries risk so incorporating these additional tests into the current process of care should be easy. The oral health professional, however, does not want to assume it will be easy without trying out the tests first. The oral health professional decides to try out the sample test kits using patient oral fluid samples. Since the oral health professional doesn’t know exactly how the tests will work, they do not tell the patients that their oral fluid samples are being used for a trial run. One patient has test results that reveal a positive result for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
