Creating a basic understanding of the origins of community. In doing so, this essay will be more selective and personal with regards to what you will use from the readings. Consider the following prompt:
Utilize this week’s reading to identify a particular community for which you are a member (or have an interest) by its political, ideological or geographic origin. Use one of the four approaches (Bourke) to define the community by using the specific criteria necessary. This should inform the basis and direction of your analysis of the specific community. As part of your analysis be sure to include the relationship that plays out between society and community (gesellschaft and gemienschaft). The best way to do this would be to demonstrate the means by which one directs the other or the impact of each on the other. Lastly, incorporate at least two of McKnight’s components with specific examples and the role they play in the functioning of your specified community.
In framing you essay be sure to consider the following:
- The specific variety of community.
- Be consistent as possible in building on your previous essay.
- A particular context for the analysis of your community.
- The function or mission of the community identified.
- Consider the readings as much as possible, wherever needed.
