Part 1. Choose a theme from the list below and find either song lyrics OR a short scene from a film that also uses this theme.
- Love (filial/maternal/paternal, or platonic ONLY, due to the excess of romantic options)
- Alienation/Otherness: (gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, religion, disability, economic)
- The American Dream/American Nightmare
- The Quest for Identity/Coming of Age
- Conformity/Rebellion
In your post, be sure to name the song title and artist, OR the title of the film and its director. Copy and paste the most relevant song lyrics into your post (the lyrics or dialogue themselves will not factor into your required word count) or the most relevant lines of dialogue. If possible, include an video link (or audio, if video is not available) to your song or scene so that the rest of us can enjoy it too.
Then, explain how and why the theme is represented in your selection.
Part 2. Next, respond to any two of the following questions:
- Does the song/scene represent the theme in a positive or negative way (or an interesting combination of both)? Why?
- How is the theme idealized or stereotyped (justifiably or not) in contemporary society?
- How does the song or scene’s depiction of the theme resonate with your own life?
- How is the theme represented in other forms of media? Do you see any patterns emerging?
