Practice 7.3: Find a scholarly article in your field from a different publication than you have looked at previously. Working paragraph by paragraph (and sentence by sentence if necessary), write an outline of the article.

Practice 7.4: Look again at the article you just outlined. Mark all the transitions in the article, and then try to decide which sort of transition each is.

Finally, explain how, if at all, this source will fit into your upcoming research paper. How does this source influence your thesis? How might you use this source as one of your own transitions in your research paper?

Specific requirements: For this worksheet, create a single document of two to three pages. Include the following:

·         A reference page and a title page.

·         A section for your article outline (Practice 7.3). You may use bullet points for your outline. Label it with the heading Practice 7.3.

·         Next, write in paragraph form (no bullet points) an analysis of how the author’s argument moves. How does the author transition from point to point? How does each sub-section fit together to make the overall argument? Label this section of your document with the heading Practice 7.4.

·         Finally, write in paragraph form an explanation of how you will use this article in your upcoming research paper. Try to critique the article by writing about the author’s intentions the intended audience. Was the author’s argument successful or not? How does the argument compare with other arguments in this field of study? What are the argument’s strengths or weaknesses? How will you use this source to make one of your own points in your paper?
