Portfolio Assignment 2.1: Journal

Writing fluency is a vital skill to have and to continue to develop. As you are faced with more opportunities and situations in which you are required to compose a well-thought-out summary, essay, or journal without time to brainstorm or outline, you need to have the skills necessary to be able to bring your thoughts together in an organized way. Many students have been journaling since elementary school and think they have outgrown them, but journals are still a valuable tool in helping develop this fluency—and with fluency comes style.

As well as strengthening your writing skills, these journals are a way for me to get to know you. There is something personal about writing, and when a writer invests more of him or herself in the writing experience, it allows the reader to see a glimpse into that person. It can be an exciting thing, and while I will be seeing a lot of your writing through assignments, I would like to get to know you. Your journals will help.

You will select one prompt from each lesson to write about. Each journal will be approximately one page in length. The journals are required to be typed, as they will be submitted electronically. I will assume you have allowed yourself to write them without worrying about brainstorms or outlines. Your journals will all be submitted in portfolio 3, so keep track of them. It would be tragic to have written all your brilliant journals only to lose them all.

Please select one of the following prompts to write your journal about.

  • Of all the places you have traveled to, which has been your favorite? Why? Which has been your least favorite? Why? Where do you still want to go? Why?
  • So often we (as the community, as the media, or as adults) only focus on what is going wrong in the world. What do you see that is going right?
  • When it comes time for you to be remembered, what do you want to be best known for?
  • Describe a time when you were completely happy, sad, angry, or feeling any other strong emotion.

Please format and submit your assignment according to the instructions in the syllabus and format them in the following manner:

  • the portfolio submission number
  • the name of the assignment and lesson number it came from
  • your name
