A thought experiment:
What if as an infant you were adopted by a family other than the one that raised you, and this other family lived in a different country, had a different religion, spoke a different language, and had different values than the ones you were raised with. Would you be anything like the person you actually are?
Another way of thinking about this is to ask yourself, how have you as an individual – your values, beliefs, interests, preferences, etc. – been shaped by the specific circumstances in which you were raised? Is there an essential you that is independent of the social and biophysical contexts you have experienced?
