Commentary/Critique attempts to observe and understand a musical work, visual art,
literary work, an idea, a trend, performance, style, etc. and any relationships it has with
things similar or different/contrasting from itself.
Exposure to new and unfamiliar ideas enables you to observe and think differently, expand your
knowledge and possibilities for comparisons and interconnections. Research, observe details and consider
overall perspectives; consider the information, use your imagination, interpretation and critical thinking.
You can write about the topic, any research, observations, interpretation and your experience as a viewer-listener.

Innovation and experimentation play a vital part of new music composition and performance.
Josh Perry was guest performer in class this week. Josh performed “Air-Guitar” with rock music playback. Then on Youtube we saw Josh’s performance of composer Stuart Saunders Smith’s “Songs I-IX” (1982) for percussionist-actor using small percussion instruments and various household items from kitchen. In addition to acting, the percussionist also recites text and vocalizes.
In our class, Josh Perry also discussed performing, acting, different audiences and venues for rock music and contemporary concert music including those below and mentioned his performance
group Iktus Percussion and the upcoming May 9, 2015 performance at Firehouse Space, Brooklyn.

COMMENTARY: by actor Wendy Salkind, “Language and Percussion: An Actor’s Perspective”. The article includes an example from Stuart Saunders Smith’s score of “Songs I-IX” showing the kinds of notation and instructions he gives the performer to follow, including instructions on performance demeanor in acting throughout the piece. Salkind writes about the “Songs I-IX” and comments another work by Smith (title: “By Language Embellished”) in this article.
