Resume background: graduate school UC daivs in BS major and work experience 9month on marketing.
Summary:
After building your resume from the Google Form (first come, first served), find a REAL position advertised during the last 30 days and tailor an appropriate resume (Chronological, Hybrid, OR Functional) that matches your chosen field/experience/education level. The position must be a REAL position that is publicly advertised (Indeed, LinkedIn, Handshake, etc).Your resume must adhere to proper content/formatting (see Chapter 9.5 AND CARP Resume Guide) conventions. Be sure to include working link/URL to the actual job listing/posting, AND YOU MUST copy/paste of the actual job description/employee requirements at the bottom of your resume. Be sure to study the rubric carefully!
Note:
- Because you’ll build your resume based on a first-come, first served basis, you’ll want to think critically before you decide how to build it. You can either find an actual type of job you’d like to apply for in the future (dare to dream!) first, OR you can take your chances and select favorable traits (popular fields with plenty of openings, solid amounts of experience, top schools), and work from there. Choose wisely and good luck building the resume you want to write!
- You may need to do some research on the field you selected if you’re not familiar with the typical duties/responsibilities associated with the position. Again, think carefully before you decide on it.
- You will have to do some basic Googling to find out the addresses/info for the colleges listed, aside from SFSU. If you’re going to do a Functional/Hybrid resume, you will also need to look at the college’s business department to see the course offerings, so you can include them in your education section, which will contain a list of relevant course work and ACTION STATEMENTS.
- Whether you use a chronological, hybrid, or functional resume mostly depends on the number of years of experience you have chosen. Typically any career lasting longer than 5 years will be CHRONOLOGICAL. Job candidates with minimal experience (2-4 years) usually use a hybrid resume. Entry level candidates with NO professional experiences must a Functional resume. These are all indicated on the Google Form.
- Since you’re only going off of what you’ve selected, you’ll obviously need to invent some (or all) of your work history. If you already have a resume that comes close to matching the one you want to build for the assignment, that may save you some time in the long run; however, other people may swipe the elements you want if you don’t act quickly enough. If you wind up with limited options, be creative and have fun “embellishing” since this is an imaginary scenario; however, make sure you’re following ALL formatting conventions on the rubric so you’ll get credit for the assignment; otherwise, you’ll have to spend time revising.
After finish the resume you have write one page cover letter
After you have created a resume to match a REAL position, write a 1 PAGE COVER LETTER expressing your desire to meet for a face-to-face job interview. To complete the assignment, use the CARP/LAC cover letter/resume guide AND OWL Purdue’s cover letter workshop.
Your CL must not exceed ONE full page.
Make sure your cover letter includes these three aspects:
1. Demonstrates why you stand out from other candidates (unique traits/person attributes/life experiences)
2. Explains why you’re a good ‘fit’ for the position (desired skill sets, shared ‘values’, synergism)
3. Fill in any ‘gaps’ left by your resume (breaks in education, work history, volunteer work, career change, etc)
