                                           Surgical Fires and Explosions 5.26

The topic Surgical Fires and Explosions found in the text book The Flying Circus of Physics by Jearl Walker discusses why fires can still occur during surgery and what precautions doctors take to prevent these fires and explosions. Before the 1950s doctors would use an anesthesia that was flammable. The flammability caused lots of problems and eventually was phased out and replaced with a safer option. Even with all the advance technology and knowledge today there is still a risk of a potential fire during surgery. Jearl talks about two procedures that have a risk of flames. The first one is a tracheostomy which is a procedure where doctors make an incision into a patient’s neck and a tube is added to increase oxygen into the body. During one procedure doctors were having difficulty because of the excess fat on the patient’s neck. A bleeding vessel needed to be fused closed so doctors used a high frequency alternating current in a procedure known as electrocoagulation. Immediately the area being cauterized ignited, but doctors quickly put it out. The second procedure is during a routine colonoscopy a polyp needed to be removed. Doctors removed the polyp using and then cauterized it with a current. During the cauterization part of the procedure flames erupted from the free end of the colonoscope. In the first procedure Jearl explains that the fire was started because of the excess fat that was surrounded by 100% oxygen. Even if the patient did not have the excessive fat on his neck a fire can still occur during the procedure because of the plastic used, and plastic burns very easily in 100% oxygen. The colonoscopy ended in flames because of the gases produced in our bodies’ colon. Hydrogen and methane gas sit in a person colon and are produce while digesting food. Usually to prevent these gases and flames during the operation the patient is supposed to abstain from eating for a full 24 hours prior to the procedure. Sometimes if the doctor is concerned about gases still being present he or she can flush the intestines with a nonflammable gas. Burping is also caused by a buildup of gases in a person’s stomach. In some cases a person has shot out flames from their mouth or nose due to burping while lighting a cigarette. I chose to discuss the topic of surgical fires and explosions because it seemed like a fascinating topic that is usually never discussed. Also my sister had to have a colonoscopy to remove a polyp last spring, so I was able to find out why she needed to fast for a day. While the chances of a surgical fire occurring may be pretty low in today’s society with advance medical knowledge it still is a little frightening to think that either the medical instruments or myself could catch fire.
