Font: 12-point, Times New Roman
Spacing: Double Spaced

At least four sources in addition to the rhetorical artifact.

Selecting a Text
In this paper you will be analyzing the rhetoric of a popular culture artifact. This could include a song, music video, movie, television show, sports broadcast, product advertising, etc.
In this paper you will not be evaluating effectiveness. Rather, you will be offering perspective, and insight on a popular culture artifact. To do this you will select one of the critical methods discussed in class. You should select at least one of the following approaches:
Dramatistic/narrative Criticism
Feminist Criticism
Culture-Centered Criticism
Media-Centered Criticism
Visual Criticism
Psychoanalytic Criticism
Marxist Criticsm
Each of these critical methods will be discussed in class, and in your textbook. In addition, your descriptive analysis will involve an outline related to the method. Please note that a critic could combine Ideological Criticism with one of the other methods.
Structure of the Paper
Introduction (one to two pages)
Introduce the text.
Justify why it should be analyzed. Use contextual sources to address questions, such as:
oWas the text controversial?
oWas the text popular?
oDid it receive “critical acclaim” in the popular press?
oDid it tackle issues you believe are important?
State your critical method.
State your argument about the text.
Preview your analysis.
Analysis (about three pages)
The structure of this section will vary depending on your critical method(s), but it should be well-organized, and offer insights related to your methods. Make sure you explain the significance of the artifact. Do not simply summarize the artifact. Summaries are not criticism, because they offer very little perspective on the artifact.
Your analysis should be driven by the general critical probes in Ch. 3 of the textbook, along with the more specific probes related to the methods in Ch. 4 or Ch. 5. Look very closely at the textbook, and your lecture notes before writing the paper. Keep in mind that you should first address these questions in your Descriptive Analysis.
Conclusion (about one page)
Briefly summarize your argument.
Offer some broader insights, such as:
oRaise ethical concerns
oSpeculate on where popular culture is headed
oHow your study might relate to other artifacts
oWho should care about your insights?
oOr, how could your insights be used outside of academics?
lastly Overview: you will be discussing your Final Paper in a separate bored, and offering each other advice .
In about 300-500 words address the following:
1) What argument are you planning to make about the “power of rhetoric?”
2) Which concepts from class do you plan to use?
3) Which examples of rhetoric, from class or elsewhere, do you plan to use?
