For example, a sociology or psychology major can look at how social media influence relationships, a computer scientist could research concerns of privacy or net neutrality, and a history major may present an overview of how research has changed. A business or economics major might want to investigate how a new marketing technique or digital solution made possible by new technology has affected their career. Science or mathematics majors could examine how one kind of research in their field or how the collection of data has been impacted by technology. A major in international studies might look at the impact of technology on global cooperation or competition and an education major could look at one way technology has affected the learning environment. Engineering or journalism majors can investigate an aspect of these careers that have been impacted by technology. Film studies or music majors could examine how technology has impacted the ways film or music are produced and marketed.

Your research may result in an argumentative essay depending on your topic, but it does not have to.The idea is to dive deeply into a particular aspect of your field of study that has been affected by the accelerated technology of the last decade and to document and analyze this impact. During the process of your research, you may find yourself taking up a position on your topic that you wish to argue, or you may prefer to maintain an informative approach, highlighting the significance and implications of your topic.

This essay will require you to conduct library research and acknowledge sources using the MLA research format.

You will need to provide context for the topic you have chosen, including background information for both your field of study and the type of technology that has impacted it. You may include class readings among your sources. You will need to develop a thesis that is supportable with your research. It does not have to be an argument, but it should highlight an issue which would not be common knowledge to your readers (your classmates).

*You must use a minimum of 6 sources by the final draft. The final draft will include an abstract and an annotated bibliography. It should be 8-10 pages, not including the abstract, works cited, or annotated bibliography.*

Check that Paper 2 has the following:

1. An MLA heading on page 1 at the top left, the title two spaces below the heading, centered across the middle of the page, and the subtitle Abstract centered below the main title

2. An abstract (that follows the guidelines provided in Week 8) appearing below the title and the subtitle on page 1, with the rest of the paper starting on page 2

3.A Works Cited page after the end of the paper with at least six credible sources that are alphabetized according to the last name of the author (or the title if there is no author)

4.An Annotated Bibliography following the Works Cited page with at least six entries

5.In-text citations that are properly formatted according to MLA referring to the author’s last name and page number if applicable

6. MLA formatting throughout the paper (including 12″ New Times Roman font, double-spacing, and 1″ margins)

Check that Paper 2 does the following:

1. Includes an introduction that engages the readers and provides enough context to help them understand the two parts of the topic: technology and the major (or future career)

2. Includes a clear thesis that lays out a connection between technology and the major (or future career)

3. Has body paragraphs that are logically sequenced with each one having a specific focus connected to the thesis

4. Cites at least one source in every paragraph and appropriately integrates it, clearly distinguishing it from the writer’s own ideas

5. Analyzes the information from the different sources and doesn’t just summarize it

6. Ends the paper with a strong conclusion that leaves the readers caring about the topic and understanding its importance
