School Study Assignment
The purpose of the school study is to provide an opportunity for you to apply a philosophical/historical/sociological theory/perspective to a particular school setting. In other words, after reading/discussing the various philosophical/historical antecedents/sociological theories of American education, and visiting a school for a minimum of ten hours, which theories/perspectives did you “observe”? The study should be at least 8 pages and no more than 12. It usually comes in at 12. I would recommend you write one or two sections a week.
Specifically, the school study asks that you:
- Describe the school setting you visited. (The grade levels, school population, type of school [public, private, religious])
- Describe the classroom you visited. (Class demographics, type of program, physical setting)
- Describe the educational practices you observed. (Types of lessons, what the teacher did, what the children did, type of activities.) This section should be as detailed as possible.
- Which historical perspective was evident in this school? Discuss the historical perspective(s) and state why you think the school setting you observed is reflective of this perspective (s). [Chapter5/6 as reference]
- Which philosophical thought(s) was evident in this school? Discuss the philosophical thought and state why you think the school setting you observed is reflective of this thought? [Chapter 3/ 4 as reference] (progressivism, idealism, perennials, and behaviorism.)
- Comment on the socio-cultural context of this school setting. (Chapter 8 as reference)
You may follow any format when writing your report. I would recommend that you use the above outline and write the study using the parts as delineated above. You are free to e-mail me questions about the school, study, or any other concern you may as it relates to the study and the report.
I have attached the outline of the child I observed please use that as a guide to help write the paper.
