For this assignment, you will apply the concepts of argument to the three books read for the course.
Here are the steps:
Review the how to write an argument sections at owl.english.purdue.edu.
Re-read The Communist Manifesto, Homage to Catalonia, and Desert Exile.
1, Write a one paragraph summary of each book. One paragraph per book.
Include in your summary three quotes from the book that are excellent examples of the what the book wants you to think about the book’s thesis.
2. Then, make a list of five techniques of argument used in each book to support the thesis (main idea) One list of five for each book (that will total 15 techniques).
Include the actual words from book (with citation) that demonstrates that argument technique.
Think of these parts of the assignment as “pre-writing” for the essay.
3. Then, develop an argument essay with a title, introduction paragraphs with topic sentences and supporting sentences, and a conclusion. Don’t forget to anchor your essay on a clear, cogent, thought-provoking, argumentative thesis statement.
The thesis statement of the essay should be about an idea that all three authors are trying to convince you to agree with. For example: “In this essay, I will convince the reader that all three of these books present an argument that working-class people are disadvantaged by economic conditions.”
