Essay: Nimona

Background: The story
begins as Nimona enters supervillain Ballister Blackheart’s lab and
introduces herself saying, “The Agency sent me. I’m your new Sidekick.”
Ballister, however, doesn’t fall for this. It’s only once he sees Nimona
shapeshift (into a shark with boobs) that he has any interest in
working with her. In this essay, you will work on analyzing a literary
text.

Some themes to think about:

  • Understanding one’s “identity,” the identity of others, and that identities are fluid;
  • The tugs of friendship and rivalry between Sir Ambroise Goldenloin and Ballister Blackheart;
  • The powers and perils of standards, rules, and stereotypes;
  • The powers and perils of oligarchies, monarchies, and all-powerful institutions;
  • The power of love and friendship;
  • The need to question rules and standards.

Your Task: Write a 5-6 paragraph essay (approximately 750 words) analyzing Nimona.

  • Discuss how Stevenson relays stereotypes and then breaks them (i.e. good vs. evil, hero vs. villain)
  • Requirements:
  • Include a clear thesis that follows the Topic/Comment Model (topic + your comment on the topic).
  • Be organized with an introduction, body, and conclusion to structure the essay.
  • Follow the PIE Paragraph model for your body paragraphs.(point, illustration then explanTION), followed by a quote from the book
  • Integrate a minimum of 3 quote sandwiches from the book. (You must have one quote in every body paragraph)
  • Be comprised of at least 3 body paragraphs (5 total paragraphs, approximately 750 words).
  • Demonstrate your ability to use grammar, punctuation, and formatting suitable for college.
