Dear Editor,
Within Lea Skene’s article, “Baton Rouge Nurse’s Death Prompts Medical Workers Nationwide to Demand Workplace Safety” of 2019, inadequate staffing puts nurses at an increased risk for patient violence, medical errors, and nurse burnout. Adequately staffed facilities increase the safety of the nurses, patients, and other healthcare personnel. Adequate staffing reduces medical errors, mortality rates, and nurse burnout as well.
Throughout my nursing career, many of the facilities that I worked for were consistently inadequately staffed. The worst facility was a specialty long-term care facility where I cared for chronically ill patients that required continuouscare. Due to inadequate staffing, my patient to nurse ratio was excessively high, which affected the quality of care I provided. I experienced aggressive behavior from patients and family members, job dissatisfaction, and nurse burnout. I eventually resigned and found a job elsewhere.
The State of Louisiana should put laws in place that mandate adequate staffing of healthcare facilities. Healthcare facilities that do not abide by the laws would be legally responsible for any negative outcomes related to inadequate staffing. Without these laws, the ongoing cycle of understaffing will continue and cause problems in recruiting and retaining nurses. Recruitment and retention issues will lead to a shortage of nurses and seriously affect staffing. Inadequate staffing put nurses and patients at an increased risk for negative outcomes. Implementing laws that hold healthcare facilities accountable for inadequate staffing is a step in resolving this issue. Nurses and other healthcare workers must report incidences of inadequate staffing to the Louisiana Department of Health to combat this issue.
Sincerely,
