Women in the Media Summer Popular Culture Assessment Paper Guidelines

The purpose of this research paper is to assess how women were/are portrayed in a specific medium (TV show, movie, book, advertisement series, music genre or by a particular musical artist) during a specific time period (the 1950s, the 1960s, the 1970s, today, etc.). For example, you may choose to examine how women are portrayed on the TV show “Desperate Housewives,” or you may choose to look at how women were portrayed in the “Star Wars” movies. Write a 500-700-word paper examining this display in pop culture. Include the following information:

  • The name of the TV show, movie, book, musical genre or musician’s work, or advertisement series.
  • The time period during which this portrayal was displayed (1950s, currently, etc.)
  • A brief (1-2 paragraph) history of this medium (for example, if you’re writing about the actresses on “Desperate Housewives,” include when the show first aired, what season the show is currently in, and how often it airs and where (network or cable channel).
  • Briefly describe the medium (again, for example, if you’re examining “Desperate Housewives,” provide some information about the show’s popularity or lack thereof).
  • Incorporate experts’ opinions of this portrayal (do not include your opinion here, but rather cite the feedback of media/advertising experts).
  • How does this portrayal support/hinder feminist goals, according to the experts?

You must use at least 2 academic sources for this paper (you may use your textbook as one source, and Wikipedia is NOT considered a reputable source).
