For discussion this week, please analyze the messages contained in a popular “womenâ€s interest†magazine (publications which tend to work well include Cosmopolitan, Elle, Allure, Glamour, Vogue, etc.) I encourage you to consider the publication as a whole: the articles, the models in the fashion spreads, the “advice” columns, the “fitness sectionsâ€, and even the advertisements.
Next, compare what you found in the women’s beauty/fashion magazine to another type of publication. This could be a “men’s interest†magazine of the same type (i.e. Esquire or GQ), or a different genre of publication altogether (TIME, Sports Illustrated, ‘O’, the Economist, BITCH (which is a feminist magazine), etc.). You will want to make sure you choose a publication with plenty of advertisements and/or content pictures (The New Yorker, for example, is not a good choice). Consider: does your second magazine include any advertisements or articles which “disrupt†the patterns found in the “womenâ€s interest†publication? Or are the same themes and patterns present?
In your “original†post remember to properly cite the magazines you analyzed, as well as any additional sources you referenced to help strengthen your argument (i.e. Jean Killbourne, the lecture PowerPoint, or the articles).
