Hello everyone, I am so happy to be here and I expect to learn a lot more through these discussions. The topic of science and gender disparity has been a subject of discussion for decades and through this forum, I will have a chance to express my thoughts. First of all, Science is a way of obtaining knowledge in a special way to understand the natural environment and attempt to make life better. The only way in which it differs with other methods of understanding the world is that it depends only on experiment, observation, and facts and personal opinions do not matter. Science is political in a way that it expounds knowledge and gives power to the people. A person who embraces sciences gets power and the power is political which means that he can use the power to manipulate the way people view the world. The relationship between science and political is that they all aim at one thing, to achieve power through knowledge. Social constructs are things that are created by the people and might not necessarily be similar with other areas. The patriarch society for example has constructed the gender roles that men are expected to be the bread winners and women be the home keepers to take care of their homes. The fact that there are other societies in the world which have another way of handling the issues of gender roles means that it is a social construct. Science, technology, and medicine are socially contracted because even though they are facts and can’t be changed, the main reason why they came to be is the need in the society and a quest to make the world a better place to live in. the sciences cannot be separated from the society which they live in.
Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is a system of education that is considered to be the antidote of the problems facing the society. Only people who are believed to have a high intelligent quotient are the ones who are expected to enter into the education system. In some societies, the STEM education is considered to be male oriented and the women are expected to excel in the languages and beauty sectors of education. Those who go through the STEM education are expected to be the most successful in life. Disparities in the STEM is based on the power that come along with the remuneration of the courses. Since the society puts more attention to men as the powerful people, the courses which are expected to deliver power are set aside for the men. There are promising steps that shows that the gender disparities in STEM will be eradicated. The gender stereotyping which limits women on the things that they can do will make ends meet. Female role models are used to reduce the fears that women have to enroll in the STEM courses. The equity legislations are passed to ensure that both girls and boys get equal opportunities to enroll in the stem courses. Gender disparity may be rooted in the society but through the use of role model and dismantling the gender stereotyping and giving both genders equal opportunities will make them perform better.

An individual is determined by their biology based on the biological characteristics that are present in that person. For example, genetics is a subdivision of biology and genes are known to be passed from parent to offspring. So certain physical traits may be carried towards the offspring when it is born such as the color of its eyes, hair color, freckles, etc. Another example of how individuals are determined by biology may also have to do with anatomy, one of the major branches of biology that studies the internal organs and internal formation of the human body. Biology also has a huge influence on society. For example, most people agree that if your anatomy includes a uterus and ovaries, you should automatically be categorized as a female. Most people seem to confuse sex with gender. Sex leans more towards the biological characteristics you are born with, like the type of reproductive system you have while gender is usually assigned to you even before birth during an ultrasound because it makes it easy for society to distinguish who is male and female. In reality, gender is more about how you identify and takes into consideration your self-expression. For example, gender-neutral individuals prefer to be called “they/them” instead of “she/her” or “he/him” as they might not identify as belonging to a female or male role in society. It is important for us to understand and not enforce stereotypical roles and genders on people simply because of their biological characteristics.
