2929 unread replies.2929 replies.
Read the blue section titled, Technology Explorations and Activities… Health and Wellness Sites on the Internet on the bottom of page 326 in your textbook. You will be exploring health and wellness internet websites (e.g. KidsHealth, Healthy Habits for Life Sesame Workshop; Eat, Play, Grow curriculum, Choose My Plate, etc.)
For this week’s Discussion you will answer the Research, Reflect, and Respond questions:
1. What did you like about the content you found on the website(s) you reviewed? Was there anything you saw that might not fit with what has been described in this book as developmentally appropriate practice?
2. How would you use the information you found on the website(s) in your work either with children or with their families?
3. Was there anything that might be useful to you personally in your own health and wellness efforts?

1. What did you like about the content you found on the website(s) you reviewed? Was there anything you saw that might not fit with what has been described in this book as developmentally appropriate practice?
I really liked everything I found from https://kidshealth.org/en/kids/grow/ (Links to an external site.)
It has plenty of great information. Under parents, you can find the developmentally appropriate practice information where it informs you what your baby should be doing at that age, movements, coordination, senses, and sleep. I also found good information about feelings/ emotions and how to deal with those emotions/feelings, something similar to what the book pg 327 talks about ( Motor skills and emotions) using running as a method to control anger or art materials. Also, the website gave similar information to pg 329 the values of Health Education I just think the book: Teaching young children mentioned more in detail why children get sucked into selecting unhealthy food items due to TV messages which poor nutrition is prominent.
2. How would you use the information you found on the website(s) in your work either with children or with their families?
I really liked the website: https://kidshealth.org/en/kids/grow/ (Links to an external site.) they have animated information for kids anything about health, how to stay healthy, how the body works as well as good information about puberty and growing up. I also liked that they have information for teens, parents, and educators. while watching these videos I started to get some really good information about healthy weight, calorie intake, 5 food groups to eat daily, portions, physical activities, they even have breastfeeding information and information on kids with special needs. etc. similar information to the pamphlets we offer at work. Also, I played some videos for my 6-year-old daughter and she loved the animation and she started to really understand healthy habits in a fun way. I also read some mini descriptions of articles and videos that aired from https://www.sesameworkshop.org (Links to an external site.) they have information about families coming together to help the community and their children be healthy and how to get resources that they may need. There’s an explanation of episodes of a documentary from the perspective of children of their experiences and challenges discussing real situations like homelessness, parental incarceration, military caregiving, and climate displacement which I thought was something I would be interested in watching to get an idea once I’m in the child education field and I can be able to help children/ families with those resources.
I work at WIC- (Women, Infant, and Children) I am what you call a Nutrition Educator, I have to complete nutrition and breastfeeding education assessments daily. I take anthropometric measurements to go over with parents about their children’s weight, how much they have gained in a 6 month period, then we discuss what they eat and drink daily, and portions they eat as well as how much physical activity they do on a daily basis. Then I give them information about a healthy lifestyle and I guide them to choose a goal and little by little they start changing to healthier ways, the parents start to get involved and help their children get motivated. I would use this website and the information I gathered today and use it on my assessments. I also think I would use animated videos for children and try to ask them open-ended questions to see what information they gathered from the video and what information caught their attention in order for them to try.
3. Was there anything that might be useful to you personally in your own health and wellness efforts?
Yes, definitely all the information I read is very useful in my own health and wellness efforts. I myself need to change some ways and make them healthier so I can be a good role model for my children.

1.I liked that KidsHealth has a variety of resources for parents, kids, teens and educators. Also, they have short videos that discuss different health issues. There are videos for parents who want to help them care for their child. There are also videos for teens to discuss different health issues such as study break yoga and losing weight through the eyes of a teenage boy. It is nice that the link has activities, experiments, and quizzes for children to do with their family or in the classroom. I think that it is convenient that the website has a link to the Sesame Street workshop tools to help teachers and educators with lesson plans.
On the Sesame Street website, I thought that it was a smart decision to have Michelle Obama talk with Big Bird about health issues. This will set a good example for children, parents and teachers because they will see two well known figures discussing the importance of eating healthy and exercising. I thought it was a great idea to have a workout video of Grover to help young children exercise.
The website Eat, Play Grow Curriculum has a variety of resources that consist of art-making, story telling, music and movement activities, and hands-on education lessons. These emphasize the importance of making positive choices in health areas like eating healthy, exercise, and sleep.
I like how Choose My Plate has a quiz to find out how healthy your choices are and that it gives healthful tips. Also, there are other quizzes to test your knowledge on the different food groups that one needs daily. For example, you can test your knowledge on fruits to find out which fruits provide more nutrients and to find out the different types of nutrients they provide. It is helpful that there is an app you can download onto your phone to help keep track of your eating habits and to know where you need to improve. It is convenient that all the sites have recipes to help you make a nutritious meal.
I did not find anything on the websites that did not fit the developmentally appropriate practice as described in the textbook. I felt that every website covered at least one or more of these practices. For example, KidsHealth offers experiments, healthy eating options and the importance of physical exercise.
- I would print out activities for my students to complete in class and at home with their family. I would also show some of the videos to my students in the classroom and discuss what they learned and how they felt. To make sure that the parents get the information I would send them links to the videos by posting them on the class blog, emails and letters that I send home to parents. I would include the website url so parents can look at them on their own time and also with their child. I would incorporate many of the experiments found on KIdsHealth website into my curriculum.
3. I would try use Choose My Plate to help me eat healthier. I would also use the extra resources to find out more about added sugars, saturated fats and sodium. I plan to use the app to help me know what foods I need to be eating to stay healthy.
