I’m working on a computer science presentation and need support to help me learn.
Imagine your smart phone or other hand-held device, has the ability to provide information based on inputted data from a health app on your smartphone to your providers’ patient portal. Your smart phone or device sends an abnormal health update to your patient portal. The provider reviews the abnormal reading and is able to flag any abnormal input as needed; all in an attempt to better manage your health. The provider sends a message for you to contact them and come in for an evaluation. Since the provider was in a hurry and will be seeing other patients, they decided additional information was needed to be sent to you. The provider asks the office staff to send you a regular email explaining why you need to make an appointment to come in and be seen. The office staff accidentally hits the “send all” button and sends the email to other people on your family listserv. Your family calls you and they are upset about what they read. One of the largest problems with healthcare information security has always been inappropriate use by authorized users.
Answer the following questions in a voice enhanced power point presentation or video:
- How would you feel in this situation?
- What is the problem? (Clearly state the problem)
- What is the security breach here?
- How do HIPAA and the HITECH Act help to curb this problem?
- Suppose you are the privacy officer in the institution, how would you address the problem? What recommendations do you have to prevent future issues?
