I’m working on a sociology multi-part question and need a sample draft to help me understand better.
Q1
- First watch this ~6 minute video: *Warning, it’s pretty intense – contains violence*
- After you have watched it, I’d like you to read over the scene-by-scene breakdown of this same video that is shown here: CLICK HERE (read along from the top of the page to the bottom as it deconstructs each scene).
- Imagine and then briefly describe in the form of a short essay three behaviors/situations or “scenes” that you think should be included in a hypothetical “American Female” video — in essence, if MTV were to have made this video instead about the “American Female,” how might it have looked? Be thoughtful and precise on this.
I want our discussions of these hyper-realistic stereotypes to inform your thinking this week. Remember, gender is a social construct that is both made and remade with each successive generation. I look forward to reading what you come up with.
Q2
Intersectionality is the idea that it is critical to understand the interplay between social identities such as race, class, gender, ability status, and sexual orientation, even though many social systems and institutions (such as the law) try to treat each category on its own.
For this question, I’d like to watch/re-watch Dr. Kimberlé Crenshaw’s TED Talk …and then imagine and describe a similar situation in which two different social identities (such as race, gender, ethnicity, (dis)ability status, age, sexual orientation, citizenship status, etc.) may intersect for a particular person to put them in a uniquely disadvantaged position because of this intersection. Give yourself time and be descriptive.
