Use the material in Vaughn’s book (philosophy here and now) to help you give a detailed explanation of what the mistake in a Straw Man is. To demonstrate your under- standing and to teach the idea to the rest of the class, provide a relevant real life example of the logical mistake. (You MAY use an outside source to help you present your example; be sure to summarize or para- phrase, cite, and use announcing verbs.)

Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness Analysis
Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness is about darkness and about the ways that people deal with darkness. Using specific supporting evidence (quoting and paraphrasing) from the novel, explain what Conrad means by the “darkness.” Also, explain how the novel suggests some of the different ways that characters deal with this darkness.
Relate this to your own life’s experience. What is the “darkness” in your life and how do you deal with it? Or, you could write about a particular “darkness” in modern-day England, and describe how the British are dealing with it. Use the SIEL writing method of quoting and explaining to make your argument. Write a four-five-page essay.
Be sure that the paper analyzes at the ” Heart of Darkness” and relates the analysis to something in your life or modern-day England more generally. [You can use news websites to gain an understanding of modern-day events in England. Be sure and cite them.]
