What Guides Our Actions Discussion

1. Miller’s On Not Being Someone Else: Tales of our Unled Lives gives us plenty of examples upon which to reflect. The questions now is—how should we act? Nietzsche’s The Gay Science is rich in suggestions. Ask yourself if being “the poets of our life” (299) arises from “hunger or superabundance” (370). In thinking about this, how can we prepare for our being (283, 154, 317) to say “yes” to live our life “innumerable times” (341)? [ The Gay Science numbers refer to paragraph numbers, not page numbers].

2. In paragraph 270 Nietzsche states, “ What does your conscience say?—‘You shall become the person you are.’” Tall order. Read and reflect on this, and on these paragraphs from The Gay Science: 11, 354, 52, 91, and write a poignant and inspiring “How Nietzsche can help your becoming.”

3. Miller has introduced an example of continual becoming through the painter Pierre Bonnard (183-186). I also included some of Bonnard’s works on our main Blackboard page. To write this paper you must: a) carefully read Miller’s pages 183-186, b) contemplate the Bonnard paintings and find an interesting quote or detail from Bonnard’s life that you may use, and c) read, find inspiration from, and use any parts of paragraphs 299, 367, 78, 87, 107, of Nietzsche’s The Gay Science. Once you have done a, b, c, you are ready to write a guide to help a future student find their way in this course.
