College athletics are currently under intense scrutiny for a myriad of reasons. Some have suggested that to fix college athletics we should pay student athletes, while others like Senator Ralph Nadar argue that the only way to solve the problem is to do away with athletic grant-in-aid (scholarships) entirely. Another idea that is up for debate is eliminating the one year annually renewable scholarship format in favor of a four year all cost included financial package. Within the past year the NCAA has approved a resolution that would enable colleges and universities to provide an additional $2,000 stipend per semester for all student athletes (that measure has since been put on hold). The issue of conference realignment looms large with schools changing conference affiliation in an attempt to secure portions of lucrative media contracts. Coaches’ salaries are spiraling out of control for revenue producing sports such as football and men’s basketball. These are just a handful of the issues facing intercollegiate athletics.
For Learning Activity #2- I want you to produce a two page paper ( Times New Roman font size 12 Double Spaced )that explains how you think an issue of your choosing related to college athletics should be addressed. The ideas provided above are not an all-inclusive list so please feel free to address any issue in college athletics that interests you. The goal for this assignment is for you to put forth an argument. To do that you need to summarize the problem, state your solution and defend that solution with supporting evidence. As you will be using evidence to support your argument you will need to find and cite your sources of which you will need to have at least three.
