Western Carolina University English Language Learners Legislation Paper

You will write a 6 page research paper not including references and title page in APA style.
The focus of the paper will be on one court case related to the education
of English language learners which received a significant amount of attention in the media and/or educational community.
Some examples might be Arizona’s structured immersion program, Alabama’s immigration law section
28 of HB56, Question 1 in Massachusetts. You are also encouraged to go back in history and look at
language controversies of the past (e.g., Myers vs. Nebraska, the Dawes Act or the end of missionary run
Native American boarding schools.) For those who would like to take a more global approach, you are
free to examine an international language policy as well. I encourage you not to go too broad. For
example, while the Common Core or NCLB have had a significant impact on the education of English language learners, it
would be hard to go into much depth considering how large the scope of your research would be.
