Week 3 Discussion
This week we learned about Egyptian art from the Pre-Dynastic period all the way through the New Kingdom. We also revisited the histories of Herodotus, this time reading his account of ancient Egyptian society.
Some points of discussion for this week:
In terms of content, technique, and purpose, how would you compare the Narmer Palette to the Stele of Naram Sin?
How would you compare Herodotus’ account of Egypt to his account of Babylonia? What was the most interesting thing you learned from reading this history?
From mastabas, to pyramids, to ka statues, and the mummification process, Egyptians performed complicated and fantastical funerary rituals. Do these practices seem in line with other funerary practices we have learned about in this course or did you note any interesting differences?
What is your personal interpretation of Hatshepsut’s visual representation in Egyptian art?
Akhenaten’s Amarna period was a strange and remarkable departure from the norm, both in terms of art and religion, in an otherwise strictly conventional Egyptian society. Can you think of any other period in a region’s history that departed so dramatically from tradition? When and why did this atypical episode of history occur. Additionally, do you have any theories or interpretations of your own as to why Akhenaten chose to portray himself and his family in such a unique way?
Please respond to at least two of the above prompts below. https://www.worldhistory.org/article/86/herodotus-on-the-egyptians/
