Week 3 – Research a Jazz Musician, Recording, and Dance Step

For this week’s assignment I would like you to connect with and/or research a specific KC Jazz Musician, Recording, or a Dance Step commonly used in Social Dance from this era.

Here are the criteria for your submission:

        • JAZZ ARTIST: Must be relevant to KC in the 1920s/30s. Shouldn’t be somebody who was popular AFTER they left KC. Some potential figures are: Alphonso Trent, George E. Lee, Jesse Stone, Oran Page, Buster Smith, etc..
          • This artist CANT BE: Bennie Moten, Count Basie, or Walter Page. We’ve discussed those artists enough.
        • JAZZ RECORDING: Must have been recording between 1920-1938. Many of these recordings have only 2-4 songs, so you research will really focus on describing what YOU hear. I care much more about that, than I do about historical things about the album. Relate to other things you’ve heard before OR things you haven’t heard.
        • DANCE STEPS: The history of social dance in the US is interesting, and there was a lot of popularity with dance styles in the 1910s/1920s. Find and research one of these styles. I can help research these styles if you are not able to find any!

This week’s assignment should be a bit more personal in nature than the previous weeks. I am mostly interested in you doing research on something you are interested in, and telling me what you’ve discovered.
