It is important to start young to develop healthy habits. In the past 30 years childhood obesity has quadrupled in adolescents and more than doubled among young children. Almost one out of every three children and teens in the United States is overweight or obese. Obesity is defined as having excess body fat while being overweight is defined as having excess body weight for your particular height. Childhood obesity rates are now at epidemic rates.

Obesity can lead to risk factors for cardiovascular disease including high cholesterol or high blood pressure even in children. Obese adolescents are more likely to have glucose levels at risk of developing diabetes. Simply put, if this trend continues, this could be the first generation of children to not live as long as their parents. Childhood obesity is preventable with healthy dietary habits and physical activity.
