I’m working on a health & medical question and need an explanation to help me study.
- What is “nutritionism”? What are some of the negative outcomes that this mindset has created in American in the last 3 decades?
- After 30 years of nutritional advice from health experts, Pollan says we are actually sicker than we were before. Do you agree? Why/Why not?
- Historically, people have eaten for reasons other than biological necessity. What does this mean? Do you think that eating should be foremost about bodily health? Why/Why not?
4. Pollan writes, “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.” What do you think about the simplicity of his philosophy?
- Do you agree with this statement from Pollan? “If you are concerned about your health, you should probably avoid products that make health claims….A health claim on a food product is a strong indication it’s not really food, and food is what you want to eat.”
- What does Pollan say about the link between dietary fat and heart disease? During the low-fat craze, what were people replacing fat with? What were the results?
- Chapter 9 discusses the challenges of studying nutrition and finding valid and reliable results. What are these challenges (list as many as you can)? Why is it so hard for scientists to come up with accurate nutrition recommendations?
